Delhi International Airport Limited Statement: –
- The flight operations at Terminal 2 (T2) of Delhi International Airport will stop at midnight on May 17.
- The decision was made due to a drop in passenger traffic caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted negatively on the aviation industry. Passenger traffic has decreased significantly, especially after the outbreak of the second wave of the pandemic last month (April 2021).
The step, according to the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), would aid airlines and the airport in better managing their employees in the COVID situation. Two airlines, GoAir and IndiGo, currently operate from T2 and will begin operating from T3 on May 18 before further orders are received.
The civil aviation ministry Data Shows: –
- The number of domestic air passengers a day has dropped from more than 2.2 lakh to about 75,000 in the last few weeks.
- The airport used to handle about 1,500 flights a day, but it now only handles 325 a day.
DIAL’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Videh Kumar Jaipuriar Statement: –
- The profitability of airports is determined by the number of flights that pass through them. As a result, if airline firms are experiencing financial difficulties, the airport cannot be immune.
- We were seeing a revival after the lockdown, but now we’re trapped again with the second wave of Covid-19.
