PM Modi flags off ‘world’s longest river cruise’ Ganga Vilas: Price, route, booking process, and more
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (January 13) flagged off the world’s longest river cruise, MV Ganga Vilas in Varanasi. The Ganga Vilas voyage will travel a distance of more than 3,200 kilometres via 27 river systems in five states in India and Bangladesh.
“This voyage offers an unforgettable experience from Kashi to Sarnath, Majuli to Mayong, and Sunderbans to Kaziranga. I think that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, this wonderful initiative will usher in a new era of river cruise travel in India and strengthen our government’s resolve to support Act East through both policy and practise “Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister for Shipping, Ports, and Waterways, had made the statement on Sunday.
MV Ganga Vilas Cruise Yatra was flagged off by the Prime Minister on 13 January. The cruise is expected to arrive at Dibrugarh on 1 March 2023.

What is the Route in Ganga Vilas?
The 27 river systems of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Bangladesh, and Assam will be traversed during this journey, including the three major rivers Ganga, Meghna, and Brahmaputra. The voyage will traverse through the river systems of the Bhagirathi, Hooghly, Bidyavati, Malata, and Sundarbans as it makes its way through West Bengal.
Before flowing into Assam’s Brahmaputra, it will pass via Bangladesh’s Meghna, Padma, and Jamuna rivers. Throughout the 51-day trip, passengers will view 50 tourist attractions, including World Heritage sites, National Parks, Ghats, and significant cities like Patna in Bihar, Sahibganj in Jharkhand, Kolkata in West Bengal, Dhaka in Bangladesh, and Guwahati in Assam.
With stops made at key historical, cultural, and religious sites, the MV Ganga Vilas’ itinerary was specifically selected to highlight India’s rich cultural and religious past. From the well-known “Ganga Aarti” in Varanasi, it will stop at Sarnath, a sacred Buddhist shrine. Additionally, Majuli, the largest river island in Assam and the heart of Vaishnavite culture, as well as Mayong, known for its Tantric crafts, will be covered.
To understand more about India’s academic and spiritual heritage, guests will also visit the Vikramshila University and the Bihar School of Yoga. The trip will also pass through the Kaziranga National Park, home to the one horned rhino, and the Sunderbans in the Bay of Bengal delta, both of which are rich in biodiversity and are designated as World Heritage Sites.
