According to AFP correspondents, the tremors were experienced in Lebanon, Syria, and Cyprus.
According to USGS, a 6.7-magnitude quake occurred near the site of the first quake, about 15 minutes later. This caused residents in Lebanon to be jolted from their beds, with buildings shaking for around 40 seconds. In response, many Beirut residents left their homes and either took to the streets or drove away from buildings in their cars.
Why is Turkey so prone to earthquakes?
Turkey is located on top of major fault lines and experiences frequent earthquakes. In 1999, a powerful earthquake hit northwest Turkey, resulting in 18,000 deaths.
Meanwhile, experts continue to issue warnings and predictions that a potentially devastating earthquake could hit Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, in the near future.
In January 2020, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Elazig, resulting in the deaths of over 40 people. Then in October of the same year, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Aegean Sea, causing 114 fatalities and injuring over 1,000 individuals.
Here is a list of some significant earthquakes that have occurred in Turkey:
- August 17, 1999 – A magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit the northwestern region of Turkey, causing over 17,000 fatalities and widespread damage.
- March 8, 2010 – A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the eastern region of Turkey, killing 51 people and injuring over 1,000.
- May 24, 2011 – A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the eastern province of Van, resulting in over 600 deaths and thousands of injuries.
- October 23, 2011 – A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the eastern province of Van, causing 38 deaths and injuring over 500.
- October 30, 2011 – A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the eastern province of Van, causing over 400 fatalities and thousands of injuries.
- January 24, 2020 – A magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit the province of Elazig, resulting in the deaths of over 41 people and injuring hundreds.
- October 30, 2020 – A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Aegean Sea, causing over 114 fatalities and injuring over 1,000.
This is not an exhaustive list, but it includes some of the significant earthquakes that have impacted Turkey in recent years.
