The fatal fire incident aboard the Sabarmati Express near Godhra on February 27, 2002, which killed 59 devotees returning from Ayodhya following a religious rite, is reported to have been revealed by the movie The Sabarmati Report.

The principal actor, Vikrant Massey, said that seeing the film with Prime Minister Modi was an experience he could not put into words. He called the movie the high point of his career and expressed his happiness, urging others to see it.

Following the screening, PM Modi praised the filmmakers on X for their hard work in making the story a reality.

Former Indian Film actor Jeetendra shared with reporters that this was the first time he had watched a film with Prime Minister Modi, thanks to his daughter Ekta Kapoor, one of the film’s producers. The veteran actor recalled that PM Modi told him it was the first movie he had seen since becoming the Prime Minister. Actor Raashii Khanna, who also attended the screening, echoed similar sentiments and expressed her delight at the experience.

The ruling BJP has actively supported the film, with several state governments declaring it tax-free.

At the time of the 2002 Godhra incident, which triggered communal riots, PM Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The state police had blamed a Muslim mob for setting the train coaches on fire, leading to the tragic deaths of 59 people. However, many of those charged in the case were later convicted in court. The incident stirred a major political controversy, with an inquiry commission formed by then-Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, a Congress ally, concluding that the fire was accidental.

However, the Gujarat High Court declared the panel to be illegal and revoked its conclusions.
