What is IQ?
Intelligence is assessed through various intelligence tests is expressed in terms of intelligence quotient or IQ. The storm was first coined by the German psychologist William stern in 1914, for the ratio of mental age and chronological age, which was then multiplied by 100 in order to eliminate the decimal point. The formula for calculation of IQ was expressed as
IQ= MA*100/CA
Where MA stands for mental age and CA stands for chronological age of the individual whose intelligence is being tested.

- Japan: It has an astonishing IQ of 106.48, which makes it the highest IQ in the entire globe.
- Taiwan: Taiwan has an impressive average IQ of 106.47. It stands second in the list.
- Singapore: Singapore has an average intelligence quotient of 105.9. It stands third in the entire globe in terms of IQ.
- Hongkong: Hongkong has an average intelligence quotient of 105.34. It stands 4th in the list.
- China: China has an average intelligence quotient of 104.1. It is fifth in the list.
Where does India rank?
Our nation, India has an average intelligence quotient of 76.2. It is positioned at 143 globally. Various reasons support the placement of our nation at such as lower rank. Even in the present time, not all students have access to education. It can be due to gender discrimination. Area also plays a significant role. Generally, it is found that the condition of education is not very impressive in rural India. Parents don’t prefer to send their children to distant places for learning.
India is facing employment. It has also contributed to the rising financial concern in the nation. It is a developing nation- developing in many respects. With our continued efforts, we can do better in future.
How the ranking is done?
This ranking is done on the basis of studies by Richard Lynn and David Becker of the Ulster institute. Their study was published in 2019. The IQ level of various nations were examined using a standardized tests which examines reasoning problem solving and abstract thought of the people of that particular nation. This study also offers important insights into the manner intelligence levels fluctuate around the world. It provides scholars a deeper understanding of the factors which affect cognitive domains in different areas.
Understanding the working of IQ tests
The intelligence quotient tests measure many intellectual abilities comprising logic, reasoning and problem solving. It does not measure the whole range of intelligence. The key abilities such as emotional intelligence, creativity and practical problem solving is not covered by the intelligence quotient tests. It is to be noted that though these rankings give us a valuable information but they do not determine the overall intelligence of a country.
Role of education and shaping the IQ scores
But this is a problem in determining the intelligence quotient of a person. It is quite obvious that Japan, Taiwan and Singapore are quite disciplined in terms of their academic training. It focuses on improving the reasoning and critical thinking. Howsoever, our nation is facing challenge in terms of education. But it cannot be denied that it is progressing towards quality learning. The continued efforts and reforms in education, the possibilities are quite likely to see the upcoming change in the years ahead.
