On January 16, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union cabinet authorized the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission to update the pay of around 50 lakh central government employees and the benefits of 65 lakh pensioners.
The pay panel will base the fitting factor between 1.92 and 2.86, according to media sources. If the 2.86 fitment factor suggestion is approved, a government employee’s minimal base pay will increase from Rs 18,000 to Rs 51,480 per month. Based on the same consideration, the present minimum pension of Rs 9,000 will increase to Rs 25,740.

8th Pay Commission Update: Central Govt Employees’ DA Likely to Reset to Zero
If the 8th Pay Commission follows the same pattern as the 7th Pay Panel, the Dearness Allowance (DA) of Central Government employees is expected to be merged with the basic pay, leading to a reset of the DA structure.
The establishment of the 8th Pay Commission, which would result in the modification of the wages of around 50 lakh central government employees and the allowances of 65 lakh retirees, was authorized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 16, 2026. The appointment of the Commission’s chairman and two members is imminent. I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the decision to establish the 8th Pay Commission.
About 49 lakh government workers and 68 lakh pensioners would have their pay ranges affected by the 8th Central Pay Commission if it is established and its recommendations are approved. According to Vaishnaw, discussions with the federal government, state governments, and other interested parties would take place.
