The government has amended the Aadhaar Act, granting private companies the ability to utilize Aadhaar authentication. This move will streamline verification processes in sectors such as hospitality, healthcare, e-commerce, education, and credit rating, making services more accessible and efficient.
Central Government Implements Major Changes in Aadhaar Verification
Additionally, the central government has introduced a significant change in Aadhaar verification. Private companies are now permitted to integrate Aadhaar-based face authentication into mobile applications. This advancement aims to enhance user convenience by simplifying access to various services.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has launched a new portal called (swik.meity.gov.in) to facilitate Aadhaar verification for both government and non-government entities. The portal aims to enhance service accessibility by enabling organizations to integrate Aadhaar authentication into their systems. Eligible institutions can apply for Aadhaar verification through this platform, and upon approval, they can incorporate it into their services.
Aadhaar is a unique identification number issued by the Government of India for residents of the country. According to the Supreme Court’s ruling, the use of Aadhaar is voluntary; however, it is mandatory for certain government schemes and tax-related services. The UIDAI has introduced verification methods like face authentication and OTP-based verification to enhance security and accessibility.
What’s the New Rule?
The government has amended the Aadhaar Act, allowing private companies to use Aadhaar authentication—a privilege previously limited to government departments. This amendment, notified on January 31, 2025, will simplify identity verification in sectors such as hospitality, healthcare, e-commerce, education, and credit rating through Aadhaar authentication.
How Will It Benefit Users?
- Customers will no longer need to repeatedly submit documents for e-KYC, exam registration, and other services.
- UIDAI has introduced a Virtual ID (VID) for Aadhaar holders, enabling identity verification without sharing the actual Aadhaar number.
- Aadhaar holders can now lock and unlock their biometric data, enhancing security and privacy.
- Companies will be able to easily manage employee attendance and verify customer identities.
- Services can be accessed anytime, anywhere through face authentication for seamless verification.
