Differentiation is not a bad quality or a reason to be limited. We spoke with two mothers of autistic children on World Autism Awareness Day, and they told us about the difficulties they encountered while raising their sons and how those difficulties turned into something lovely as they went along.
World Autism Awareness Day 2025: Mothers Share Their Journey of Raising Autistic Children
Pranav Bakhshi and Anupama Bakhshi
As a mother, Anupama Bakhshi claims that she has succeeded in raising her child because Pranav Bakhshi, who is now a model, overcame all obstacles in his life to become self-sufficient. His superpower, in his opinion, is his disability.
As a child, Anupama had to take advantage of every circumstance while caring for Pranav. She remembers, “I realized much later that that was not the right path to be on as a mother, and there were sleepless nights, tantrums, cries, and what not.” She was adamant that Pranav became the person he is now because of the immense sense of responsibility and ownership that comes with being a mother, particularly of a special child.
Even if a child is on the autism spectrum, they are all unique. When raising the child, there are no strict guidelines or rules to adhere to. “You just need to talk to them even if they’re not listening, be patient with them, and learn with them,” she says.
Children with autism also possess unique abilities and skill sets from birth. According to Anupama, youngsters take in everything that is around them, both good and bad, and they apply that to their own characteristics. “It is a full circle moment that he can now be a voice for young kids on the spectrum and be their support all on his own,” she adds, adding, “my biggest achievement today is that Pranav wants to be independent and does not need his mom for day to day activities.”
