The Out Factory, a Bangalore-based manufacturer, is re-engineering the traditional yurt with Indian innovation and is now launching in the competitive U.S., U.K., Canadian and Australian markets, showcasing the power of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
In a significant milestone for India’s burgeoning manufacturing sector, Bangalore-based The Out Factory has officially announced its expansion into the U.S., U.K., Canadian and Australian markets. The company is not just exporting a product; it is exporting a uniquely Indian success story—one that takes an ancient nomadic dwelling from Mongolia, re-engineers it with Indian innovation, and positions it as a world-class product for a global audience.
This move marks a major moment, shifting the narrative from India as a service provider to India as a global hub for high-quality, innovative manufacturing.
A Journey of Relentless Innovation
The company’s path to global manufacturing is a story of accidental success forged into deliberate excellence. The journey began in 2018, not with a business plan, but with a passion project. “We never set out to build a business. We just wanted to build something cool,” says Praveen Krishnaiah, co-founder of The Out Factory and a veteran of the tech and e-commerce worlds. That “cool project” quickly gained attention, leading to an unexpected, massive first order that launched the company overnight.
This initial momentum was channelled into relentless innovation. By 2019, the company was already showcasing its fourth-generation yurt at major travel expos, refining the design with each iteration. Over the next few years, the company quietly proved its model, selling over 150 yurts and establishing a reputation for quality and durability within the domestic and regional markets. This period of focused growth was the proving ground for the current moment: a calculated and ambitious global launch built on years of real-world experience.
The Spirit of ‘Make in India’ in Action
The Out Factory’s journey is a powerful embodiment of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The company has taken on the challenge of competing in the crowded and highly-developed Western markets, not on price alone, but on superior quality, design, and a smarter value proposition.
“From the very beginning, our goal was to prove that a product made in India could be the best in the world,” Krishnaiah states. “We used the last few years to perfect our engineering and manufacturing. Every yurt we ship is a testament to the skill and potential of our domestic industry.”
From Mongolia to the World, via Bangalore
The traditional yurt, or Ger, is a Mongolian icon. The Out Factory’s innovation was to see it not just as a cultural artifact, but as a brilliant piece of design that could be modernized for the 21st century.
“We didn’t invent the yurt, but we are perfecting it for the modern world,” Krishnaiah explains. “We started with the authentic soul of Ger and then applied a tech-founder’s mindset: How can we make it stronger? More durable? More comfortable for all four seasons? How can we engineer it to seamlessly integrate the luxury amenities that the global hospitality market demands?”
The answer lay in their state-of-the-art facility in Bangalore. Here, the company developed a system that combines a heavy-duty wooden frame with multiple layers of advanced architectural fabrics, creating a permanent, four-season structure that is a world away from a simple tent.
A Global Launch as a Statement of Intent
The decision to launch simultaneously in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia is a bold one, placing The Out Factory in direct competition with long-established North American and European brands. However, the company is confident that its value proposition—offering a hyper-customizable, more feature-rich, and globally competitive product—will resonate.
The enthusiastic early reception, with orders already secured from entrepreneurs in these demanding markets, serves as powerful validation of their model.
“This is more than just a business for us,” says Krishnaiah. “This is about showing the world what ‘Make in India’ truly means. It means taking on the best, competing on quality, and winning. The fact that a product, born in Mongolia and perfected in India, will now become a luxury home in Australia and a wellness retreat in the USA is a story we are incredibly proud to tell.”
As the first containers begin their global journey from India, they carry more than just yurts. They carry the ambition of a new generation of Indian entrepreneurs who are not just participating in the global market, but are actively shaping it.
