New Delhi: The India-Afghanistan first T20I at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi began with a historic moment on Sunday as ‘Vande Mataram’ was sung before the national anthems, marking the first reported instance of India’s National Song being performed as part of the pre-match ceremony at an international cricket match.
The teams lined up on the field as the National Song was performed, after which the traditional national anthems of India and Afghanistan were played. The unusual sequence created a strong patriotic atmosphere inside the Delhi stadium ahead of the series opener.

The inclusion of ‘Vande Mataram’ was a notable departure from the usual pre-match ceremony at international cricket games, where the national anthems are generally played before the start of the contest.
Reports said the full National Song was performed before the anthems, making the moment particularly significant for the Indian cricket team and the spectators at the venue.
The development comes amid a wider government initiative around the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’. Earlier this year, the Union Home Ministry issued guidelines concerning the performance of the National Song at official occasions.

Players from both sides stood on the field during the pre-match proceedings. The rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ was followed by the national anthems, completing the ceremonial formalities before the toss and start of play.

Afghanistan, after being asked to bat first, posted 156/6 in 20 overs. Azmatullah Omarzai top-scored with an unbeaten 64, while Mohammad Nabi contributed 33. India’s Arshdeep Singh was the standout bowler, finishing with 3/19.
India then chased down the target in just 13.4 overs, winning by seven wickets and taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.
Opening batter Abhishek Sharma produced a spectacular 82 off 32 balls, including seven sixes and seven fours. Ishan Kishan added 42, helping India complete a comfortable chase.
