Citing mental health issues, Chris Gayle disclosed that he departed the Punjab Kings in the 2021 Indian Premier League because he felt mistreated.
Chris Gayle, the Universe Boss, has unrivaled success in T20 cricket. The destructive hitter has played in practically every franchise league in the world and has amassed over 14500 runs. He scored the most goals in the IPL out of the nine T20 Leagues he has participated in thus far. 4965 runs in 142 games while playing for the Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Kolkata Knight Riders between 2009 and 2021. With 357 sixes, he continues to retain the Indian Premier League record. His departure from the IPL was abrupt, even though he was a legend and had incredible hitting records.
Before quitting the season in the middle of 2021, he last played for Punjab against the Mumbai Indians. He disclosed what caused him to take that action years after the occurrence.
In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Gayle said the franchise was treating him disrespectfully. He even acknowledged crying when talking about his mental health with then-coach Anil Kumble.
“Oh, my, Punjab’s early IPL exit. I must admit that I experienced disrespect at Kings XI Punjab. As a veteran player who had contributed much to the league and the team, I felt I wasn’t being treated fairly. They behaved like a child instead. “I felt like I was going into depression for the first time in my life,” Gayle remarked.
He went on to say that at that point, his mental tranquility was more important than money.
“I was so heartbroken that I started crying when I spoke to Anil. He and the management of the franchise let me down. The captain, KL Rahul, even gave me a call and told me to remain and play the following game, Chris. However, I just packed my suitcase, saying, “I wish you all the best,” and left.”
The two-time T20 World Cup champion acknowledged that there were resentments but stated he was open to a potential IPL comeback.
“I was mistreated.” I am accessible; I will come if they want me to. However, I do have resentment. “I value loyalty greatly,” Gayle remarked.
