A journey of resilience and global recognition

GG Valves began its operations back in 1943 when a German technocrat named Gerhard Gabriel established the brand GG in Mumbai, India and the factory was called Bomby Metal & Alloys Manufacturing Co Pvt. Ltd.

The acronym “GG” is drawn from his name only showcasing the founder’s dedication to quality and excellence. GG quickly escalated to prominence and became the leading valve company in India under Gabriel’s thought leadership. It was renowned for superior quality and precision engineering during those times.

In the 1970s, the Ranka family came in a partnership with Gerhard Gabriel. This collaboration marked a new chapter in GG Valves’ history. However, after these successful collaborations, many challenges arose in the form of labor disputes and market dynamics. This series of events led to the closure of the Mumbai factory in the 1990s. It was a period of reflection and strategic planning for the Ranka family.

After completing his education and gaining valuable international exposure, Mr. Ranka spearheaded the revival of GG Valves in 1997 by establishing a base level factory in Udaipur with a total strength of 16 people. The initial years were challenging as GG Valves faced stiff competition from established players who had captured the market during GG Valves’ hiatus.

The organisation met many initial setbacks but it remained steadfast in its commitment to quality and innovation. The factory GG Valves was put on Sale during the year 2003, however, there were no buyers. Eventually, their perseverance paid off when it secured its first export order to Dubai, followed by lucrative partnerships with European companies like Pauwels Transformers.

This collaboration opened doors to the global power sector market. Here, GG Valves evolved as a promising player driven by its competitive pricing and uncompromising quality standards that set it apart from competitors.

Through strategic participation in international exhibitions and consistent delivery of superior products, GG Valves gained traction and expanded its clientele worldwide. Today, GG Valves is a name that speaks reliability, precision, and unmatched quality in the power sector. No doubt, it has solidified its position as a trusted industry player globally. In regards to the above mentioned premise, GG Valves continues to evolve and thrive in the dynamic landscape of the valve industry and is continuously leaving a lasting impact on the global market.

In this journey filled with ups and downs, Mrs. Sejal Ranka’s support was instrumental in enabling dedication and fostering growth as stated by Mr Ranka. He adds that his wife’s consistent encouragement and partnership have contributed significantly to the achievements and progress made by GG Valves.

The product portfolio

GG Valves has an extensive portfolio that includes Gate Valves, Ball Valves, Globe Valves, Steam Valves, Butterfly Valves, and Cryogenic Valves. These valves are crafted in materials such as Bronze, Stainless Steel, and Carbon Steel and exemplify precision engineering and durability.

They are offering reliable flow control and shut-off capabilities across a wide range of applications. The valves have the power to regulate fluid flow, withstand high-pressure steam or operate in cryogenic environments. All the products are designed to meet the stringent requirements of diverse industries that serve as the backbone to ensuring optimal performance, safety, and longevity.

Ventures under their purview

GG Valves has three Sister Companies that are into various segments. All of the companies are ISO 9000 certified companies. A brief overview of all the ventures has been enlisted below:

1. Translloy India Pvt. Ltd.: Specializing in the recycling of Non-Ferrous material and Foundry operations, Translloy India Pvt. Ltd. plays a crucial role in sustainable resource management and the production of high-quality metal alloys.

2. Khetaji Dhanaji and Co: This venture operates as a trading company, leveraging its expertise in sourcing, distribution, and logistics to facilitate smooth transactions and supply chains across multiple industries.

3. Western Drugs Ltd.: Focused on the pharmaceutical sector, Western Drugs Ltd. boasts a strong global presence with 95% of its products exported worldwide.

The USPs

Mr Ranka elaborated on the company’s unique selling propositions (USPs) in talks with us. He said the organization greatly focuses on quality, consistency, and customer satisfaction. At present, it has an expansive global presence across 40 countries including prominent markets like Europe, the USA, South America, the Middle East, Indonesia, Russia, Iran, and Dubai. Today, they take immense pride in delivering unparalleled quality and consistency in their valve products.

Despite the competitive landscape with numerous valve manufacturers in India, GG Valves stands out by maintaining premium pricing for its products, reflecting a 25% to 30% markup compared to competitors. However, this premium pricing hasn’t deterred leading OEMs in India such as Siemens, Hitachi, Toshiba, Prime, TELK, T& R and many more from choosing GG Valves due to its unmatched consistency and quality standards.

Mr. Ranka emphasized GG Valves’ commitment to meeting customer requirements promptly, especially in the dynamic power sector where adaptability and customization are crucial. GG Valves remains agile in accommodating even minor adjustments to its products to align with client specifications, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction and loyalty. In terms of quality assurance, GG Valves boasts an impressively low rejection rate of less than 0.01% annually.

This translates to just one rejection or complaint for every 10,000 valves delivered globally, a testament to GG Valves’ stringent quality control measures and meticulous attention to detail. Despite the challenges of operating in a labor-intensive industry, GG Valves has managed to maintain exceptionally high-quality standards, earning trust and recognition from clients worldwide.

A standout leadership philosophy

Mr. Ranka’s leadership style is characterized by a well-thought balance between handson involvement and empowering autonomy within his team. In the early stages of GG Valves’ renewed growth, Mr. Ranka supervised multiple departments with his commercial background to comprehensive understanding of the company’s operations. Despite initially lacking engineering experience, Mr. Ranka proactively engaged in learning and familiarizing himself with technical aspects crucial to the valve manufacturing industry.

With the expansion and evolution of GG Valves, Mr. Ranka realized the role of delegating authority and fostering a culture of responsibility and autonomy within each department. Hence, he ensured departments to function independently, with full autonomy to make decisions aligned with the company’s objectives. This approach enabled departments such as quality control, production, accounts, and marketing to operate efficiently, with the freedom to innovate and execute strategies without constant interference.

Mr. Ranka’s philosophy centers on providing guidance and support while allowing his team the freedom to execute tasks in their own way. He believes that empowering employees with authority leads to a more proactive and agile workforce, capable of driving growth and innovation.

By relinquishing micromanagement and focusing on strategic direction and growth initiatives, Mr. Ranka has steered GG Valves towards consistent annual growth rates of 15-20%, a testament to his leadership acumen and vision for the company’s success.

What’s with the future ahead?

In terms of discussing the futuristic vision for GG Valves, Mr Ranka has prepared a strategic roadmap towards diversification and expansion beyond the power sector. They are aiming to ensure sustained and substantial growth. And for this, the leadership takes major steps ahead making bold initiatives.

They have recruited a seasoned professional from the valve industry to spearhead the development of an extensive product line catering to diverse sectors such as oil and gas, sewage management, water distribution, and petroleum transportation. This comprehensive range will include carbon steel gate valves, globe valves, check valves, and butterfly valves, totaling 125 distinct products. The range will vary in size and capacity, ranging from 50 kg valves to 5,000 kg single valves from size DN50 to DN2000.

This ambitious project entails significant investment and dedicated effort. However, Mr. Ranka believes that successful execution will secure GG Valves’ growth trajectory for the next decade or more. This well-thought pivot is the company’s persistent commitment to innovation, market expansion, and long-term sustainability. No doubt, they are one of the most promising players in the valve manufacturing industry in the present day.

The laurels

For the employees

As per what Mr Ranka explained, the CSR activities of GG Valves involve the establishment of an internal SOP to improve the health of the employees. In this regular health checkups are done be it blood tests, eye tests, ultrasounds, CT Scans, and other major assessments. Also, they also offer basic accident precaution kits to the employees. Basic skill development training is given to every team member to help their corporate growth. However, Red Cross training is given to a few seniors to attend emergencies in the factory.

Their fire management team is not only authorized but also certified by the Rajasthan authorities. This portrays GG Valves pledge to adhering to stringent standards and ensuring the highest level of safety and compliance in fire management practices.

The CSR alignments

When asked to share their enthusiasm for CSR being such a globally acknowledged venture, Mr Ranka makes it certain that regular donations are performed to several hospitals across the state of Rajasthan.

Also, they have financially supported some underprivileged children to help them pursue their education. They are active donors to NGOs who are focused on treating children with life- threatening ailments. Though many CSR activities ensured by GG Valves are not meant for disclosing in the writeup but are worth many praises.
