PMAY-U Delivers 90 Lakh Homes to Slum Dwellers, Transforming Urban Housing

New Delhi: The Parliament was informed on Monday that a total of 6.54 crore people, including 1.39 crore households, reside in slums across the nation, and 90.60 lakh dwellings have been completed/delivered to slum beneficiaries under PMAY-U until March 3, 2025.

Tokhan Sahu, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, said in Rajya Sabha that the slum household statistic was based on the most recent Census, which was conducted in 2011.

The Ministry has sanctioned 118.64 lakh dwellings under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), of which 112.46 lakh have begun construction and 90.60 lakh have been completed/delivered to beneficiaries as of March 3, 2025, he stated.

He stated that the scheme duration has been extended till December 31, 2025 to construct the dwellings sanctioned without modifying the finance structure or implementation approach.

According to the MoS, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has supplemented the efforts of States/UTs by providing Central assistance under PMAY-U since June 25, 2015 to provide pucca houses in urban areas, including slums, across the country through four verticals: beneficiary-led individual house construction/enhancements (BLC), affordable housing in partnership (AHP), in-situ slum redevelopment (ISSR), and credit linked subsidy scheme (CLSS).

The timescale for project completion varies by state, although it typically takes 12-36 months in different verticals of the scheme and according to separate projects’ Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), according to the MoS.

MoS Sahu stated that based on the lessons learned from PMAY-U’s nine-year implementation, the Ministry has revised the plan and launched PMAY-U 2.0 ‘Housing for All’ Mission on September 1, 2024, for one crore extra eligible beneficiaries.

As of now, 30 states/UTs have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), and such states/UTs have received preliminary permission for 6.77 lakh dwellings, according to the MoS.
