All about Railway Recruitment Board Exams in 2025: A step by step guide

What Is the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB)?

The railway recruitment board is a government organization under the ministry of railways. These recruitment board is responsible for hiring. There are around 21 railway boards across India serving a particular zone.  These boards conduct examinations for various technical and non-technical posts.

The examination is conducted by the Indian Railways to provide employment opportunities in various departments such as NTPC, Group A, B, C, D and other positions. The notification regarding these vacancies is released by the Indian Railways every year. Candidates who are preparing for government services can choose the post as per their own preference and apply for the same.

What is RRB 2025?

RRB recruitment exam is the exam which is conducted by the Indian Railways to provide employment opportunities to candidates. It is a national level exam. The exam is conducted into 3 stages:

  1. Computer based test
  2. Physical efficiency test
  3. Document verification

  • RRB ALP exam
  • RRB NTPC exam
  • RRB JE exam
  • RRB Group D exam
  • RRB Health and Malaria Inspector Recruitment Exam
  • RRB ASM Exam
  • RRB SSE Exam

Railway Recruitment Board and Railway Recruitment Cell

The railway recruitment board and railway recruitment cell are two distinct recruitment bodies of the Indian railway. The railway recruitment board conducts examinations for groups and posts like local pilot, junior and junior and many more. The examination for Group D post is conducted by the railway recruitment cells. The group D post have a lower pay scale than that of Group C post. There are 21 railway recruitment boards in India based on the name of cities and 16 railway recruitment cells divided on the basis of zones.

Notification of RRB

The notifications recruitment is released when there are vacancies in any department in the Indian Railways. There is no any fixed time for any post as is dependent on numerous factors. Candidates must stay tuned for the latest update.

Exam patterns for different posts

  1. RRB Group D exam pattern
  • General science: Total 25 questions is asked which carries one marks each question
  • Mathematics: Total 25 questions are being asked which carries 1 mark per question
  • General intelligence and reasoning: A total of 30 question is asked which carries a weightage of 1 mark.
  • general awareness and current affairs: Total 20 questions are being asked which carries arbiters of 1 mark per question.

Candidates are provided 90 minutes to give exam.

The physical efficiency test for male and female candidates is different. The male candidate should be able to run 1000 meters in 4 minutes 15 second whereas female candidate has to run 1000 meters in five minute 40 second. Male candidate should be able to lift 35 KG weight for 100 meters in a single attempt there is female candidate should be able to lift 20 KG of weight 400 meters.

  1. RRB NTPC exam:

For CBT 1:

  • Mathematics: A total of 30 question is asked which carries a weightage of 1 mark per question.
  • General intelligence and reasoning: A total of 30 question is asked which carries a weightage of 1 mark per question.
  • General awareness: 40 questions is asked carrying 1 mark for each correct response.

For CBT 2:

  • Mathematics: 35 questions is asked carrying 1 mark for each correct response.
  • General intelligence and reasoning: 35 questions is asked carrying 1 mark for each correct response.
  • General awareness: 50 questions is asked carrying 1 mark for each correct response.
  1. RRB Group C exam: Questions come from sections including mathematics, general intelligence and reasoning and general science. A total of 75 questions carries a weightage of 75 marks. For every correct response, 1 mark is awarded.
  2. RRB JE Exam:

For CBT 1

  • Mathematics
  • General intelligence and reasoning
  • General awareness
  • General science
  • Physics and chemistry

For CBT 2

  • Basics of computer and application
  • Basics of environment and pollution control
  • Technical abilities

Eligibility criteria

  1. He/she must be Indian.
  2. Age: 18-36 (including relaxation)
  3. Education qualification:
  • Group D – 10th pass
  • NTPC- 12th pass or graduate
  • JE- Diploma or degree in Engineering

How to apply?

The application forms for railway recruitment boards are released on the official websites of RRB. Candidates can apply online for the recruitment. Following are the steps given:

  1. Go to the official website of railway recruitment board.
  2. Select the exam and click on apply tab of the home page.
  3. A new link for registration will appear.
  4. Enter your personal details to register successfully.
  5. Login to the website using the credentials to fill the application form.
  6. After filling the details, fill the scanned copy of documents and pay the fee.

Documents needed for RRB application form

  • 10 and 12 certificate and mark sheet
  • Graduation degree
  • Identity proof
  • Address proof

RRB Admit Card

The railway recruitment board releases the admit card of examinations at least 15 days prior to conduction of examination. Candidates can visit official website and download their admit card using the application number and their password candidates must take their admit card along the identity in the examination.

RRB Answer Key

The answer keys of the upcoming examinations will be released within a week after week examination. The answer key is provided in stages which contain the correct option each set of question paper. Primarily, the provisional answer comes in which students can raise their objection in case of error. Later on, the board releases the final answer key after reviewing the objections raised by candidates.

Result

The Railway Recruitment Board releases result separately for each stage. Candidates who appeared in these examinations can visit their official website and download the result. The result contains the number and name of the shortlist of candidates.
