Rubio Hints at Easing 25% Tariffs on India: ‘We’ve Already Started the Work
While Washington contemplates more severe penalties on Moscow and calls on Europe to take action, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the Trump administration wants to “fix” punishing tariffs on India over Russian oil.
As Washington considers further sanctions on Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Tuesday that the Trump administration aims to “fix” the penalties imposed on India for its imports of Russian oil.
Rubio called Europe’s continued purchase of “massive amounts of oil and natural gas from Russia” “absurd” in an interview with NBC’s Today show. “They want the United States to impose more sanctions, but some European countries are not doing enough,” he continued.
“We’ve already seen the measures we’ve taken with regard to India, although that’s something we hope we can fix,” he said, referring to India. However, given the course this has taken, the President is thinking about doing more and has the capacity to do more.
As revenge for its purchases of Russian energy, the Trump administration has imposed an extra 25% tax on New Delhi, bringing the total US tariffs on India to 50%, which is among the highest in the world.
Rubio emphasized that even after their summit in Alaska last August, President Trump is still angry about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intensification of the conflict in Ukraine. Rubio said, “But let’s remember, he didn’t start this war. He may have to decide to impose new sanctions at some point.” He inherited it, and his only goal has been to put an end to it.
The secretary also restated Trump’s assertions that regional disputes will be resolved. “Observe the President’s actions and the conflicts he has ended, including those in India, Pakistan, and Thailand and Cambodia. The President has consistently been the sole global leader with the authority to intervene,” Rubio stated. “To me, that doesn’t seem like a third-world nation. That seems like a highly strong, well-respected nation that is more powerful and influential globally.
However, India insists that bilateral discussions between the two forces’ Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) led to the truce over the Line of Control.
On the fringes of the 80th UN General Assembly session in New York on Monday, Rubio met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The first in-person meeting since tensions arose over trade tariffs and India’s energy relations with Russia lasted an hour.
