Elections 2024: Tuesday Tradition

Over the past 175 years, The United States of America has always elected its president on or Tuesday. More specifically, on a Tuesday following the first Monday in the month of November every 4 years.

Historians say the answer lies in 19th century American lifestyle. The choice of Tuesday in November is deeply rooted on the country’s agrarian culture of the time. November was ideal as iit follows the completion of harvest season. this month also avoided conflicts with early fall and planting in the spring.

Additionally, Tuesday was chosen due to religious reasons. Historians says that the term Sabbath is often used to refer to Sunday. It recognises the day of Jesus Christ resurrection and many Christians would observe a weekly day of rest and worship on Sunday.

Modern day political experts say that voting on a weekend would see an increase in turnout. They argue that holding election on a Tuesday hinders voter access to the work commitments.

What is the polling opening and closing hours?

Voting will start between 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM local time across various states.
