G20 Summit: Delhi’s Offices, Schools, Shops, and Banks to be Shut from Sept 8-10

Written by Sanjay Kumar

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that due to the upcoming G20 Summit, all government, municipal corporation, private offices, and schools in Delhi will remain closed from September 8 to September 10. This closure extends to banks, financial institutions, and shops as well.

This decision follows a recommendation from the Delhi Police’s Special Commissioner, who wrote to the Chief Secretary of the city government suggesting the declaration of a government holiday spanning September 8 to September 10. The purpose behind this proposal is to tackle potential issues related to traffic congestion and logistical challenges.

The G20 summit, which brings together leaders from the world’s largest economies, is set to take place on September 9 and September 10. The event will be hosted at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan in the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam convention centre. India holds the presidency for this summit.

The aim of the recommendation is to manage the anticipated movement of traffic, as arrivals are expected on September 8, with delegates departing to their respective countries between September 10 and 11. The letter emphasizes the necessity of curtailing traffic to facilitate the safe transportation of delegates from the airport to hotels and other venues during the summit.

Delhi Police have been diligently preparing to ensure smooth vehicular flow during the summit, especially with the attendance of prominent figures like US President Joe Biden, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and French President Emmanuel Macron. A mock drill was conducted on key roads connecting Pragati Maidan to various hotels as part of the preparation efforts.

To facilitate this, multiple teams of traffic police personnel were stationed at different intersections. Barricades were strategically placed at diversion points and junctions as part of the drill. The police are working to make sure that traffic management during the event is efficient.

The G20 summit serves as a platform for heads of state, economic experts, and representatives from diverse sectors to discuss global economic matters, cooperation strategies, and policy coordination. With the world’s focus on Delhi for this significant event, effective collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the local government will be pivotal for its success.

In light of security concerns, the police are equipping their staff with the skills needed to handle chemical and biological weapons while also focusing on enhancing their soft skills. In a noteworthy development, 19 female commandos from the Delhi Police’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit underwent specialized training conducted by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at a training center in Madhya Pradesh.

Additionally, the Delhi Police have taken steps to enhance their arsenal, acquiring specialized weaponry, ammunition, bulletproof jackets, and X-ray machines to ensure comprehensive security measures during the summit.
