CBSE board exam 2025 Class 10, 12 Board Exams: Passing Criteria, Grading System & Key Rules Explained

As the CBSE board examinations approach, CBSE board exam 2025 students want to know the specific prerequisites for passing. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has established clear requirements for Class 10 and 12 pupils, including subject-specific minimum scores and grading standards. With theory examinations beginning on February 15, 2025.

CBSE has outlined the passing criteria, grading system, and key rules for the Class 10 and 12 board exams in 2024-25. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Passing Marks: Students must secure at least 33% marks in each subject, including both theory and practical exams, to pass.
  • Grading System: CBSE follows a 9-point grading scale, where A1 is the highest (91-100 marks) and E is a failing grade. Grades are awarded based on relative performance rather than fixed percentage cutoffs.
  • Exam Rules: The 2024-25 CBSE exams will be conducted in pen-and-paper mode, and students must follow strict guidelines, including no electronic devices and adherence to the dress code specified for exam centers.

CBSE board exam 2025 compartment exams: Who is eligible?

Students who fail one or two topics in their CBSE board examinations can retake the compartment test to improve their chances of passing. They are given up to three attempts.

  1. First try in July/August of the same year.
  2. Second attempt: March/April of the following year.
  3. Third attempt: July/August of the following year.

If a student fails all three tries, they must retake all subjects in the next academic year.

If a student passes the practical but fails the theory, his or her prior practical grades are carried forward. If they fail the practical, they will have to repeat both the theory and practical tests.

CBSE Merit Certificates

The CBSE distributes Merit Certificates to the top 0.1% of students in each subject who fulfill the board’s passing standards.

CBSE board exam 2025 Exam Format: Theory and Practical Split Most disciplines have three-hour theoretical paper worth 100 points. For disciplines with practical components, marks are normally divided into two categories: 70 for theory and 30 for practice.
