Maha Kumbh Chaos: Massive 300 km Traffic Jam Strands Thousands of Pilgrims

Maha Kumbh Rush Triggers One of India’s Worst Traffic Jams, Stranding Pilgrims for Hours

The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela has led to one of India’s largest traffic gridlocks, with a staggering 300-kilometer-long jam, leaving thousands of pilgrims stranded for hours. The heavy influx of devotees, coupled with inadequate traffic management, has paralyzed major highways leading to Prayagraj, the host city of the grand religious gathering.

Massive Pilgrim Influx Causes Traffic Nightmare

The Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, draws millions of devotees, saints, and tourists from across the country and beyond. Authorities had anticipated heavy footfall, but the sudden uncontrolled surge of vehicles and pilgrims has overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure.

Key Reasons Behind the Gridlock

  1. Unprecedented Crowd – An unexpected surge in pilgrims has clogged roads, with vehicles moving at a snail’s pace or coming to a complete halt.
  2. Poor Traffic Management – Despite special traffic arrangements, highways and city roads have struggled to handle the overwhelming volume.
  3. Blocked Alternate Routes – Many connecting roads remain choked, limiting movement and leading to massive congestion.

Pilgrims Stranded for Hours

Reports indicate that thousands of vehicles – including buses, private cars, and trucks – have been stuck for hours, with many running out of fuel or food supplies. Several devotees, including elderly pilgrims and families with young children, have been left without basic amenities.

Authorities Scramble for Solutions

Officials have deployed additional police personnel and traffic marshals to manage the congestion, divert vehicles, and restore smooth movement. However, the sheer scale of the jam has made it difficult to bring immediate relief.

As the Maha Kumbh Mela continues, authorities are urging pilgrims to use public transport, follow designated routes, and plan their travel carefully to avoid getting stranded. With more key bathing dates approaching, officials are on high alert to prevent further traffic chaos. Stay tuned for more updates on the situation at Maha Kumbh Mela 2025.
