Hyundai Nexo Set to Redefine Eco-Friendly Mobility in India with 2025 Launch

By Business Connect Magazine

Hyundai Motor India Limited is gearing up to introduce its groundbreaking hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), the Hyundai Nexo, to the Indian market, with an anticipated launch date of November 2025. This move marks a significant step in Hyundai’s commitment to sustainable mobility and positions the Nexo as a potential game-changer in India’s automotive landscape. Unveiled globally as the second-generation model at the Seoul Mobility Show 2025, the Nexo promises cutting-edge technology, impressive range, and a bold new design, making it a flagship in Hyundai’s eco-friendly portfolio.

Hyundai Nexo Set to Redefine Eco-Friendly Mobility in India with 2025 Launch

A Hydrogen-Powered Future
The Hyundai Nexo, first showcased in India at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2024, is not your typical electric vehicle. Powered by a 95-kW fuel cell stack paired with a 40-kWh battery pack, it generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapor. The latest iteration, revealed on April 2, 2025, at the Seoul Mobility Show, boasts a revamped “Art of Steel” design philosophy, a 190-kW fuel cell system, and a front-mounted electric motor delivering 201 horsepower and 395 Nm of torque. Hyundai claims the Nexo offers a range exceeding 700 km (approximately 435 miles) on a single hydrogen fill-up, with refueling taking just five minutes—a stark contrast to the charging times of battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

This eco-conscious SUV is equipped with advanced features like dual 12.3-inch displays, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, a 360-degree camera, Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and a premium Krell audio system. Its air purification system, which filters out PM2.5 particulates, further enhances its appeal as a vehicle that not only avoids polluting but actively cleans the air as it drives.

Latest Updates: A Step Closer to India
Hyundai has been teasing the Nexo’s potential in India for years, with multiple showcases and feasibility studies signaling its intent. In March 2021, the Nexo received type approval from the Indian government, hinting at an imminent launch. However, the lack of hydrogen refueling infrastructure has been a persistent hurdle. Recent developments suggest progress: Hyundai’s ₹6,180 crore investment in Tamil Nadu, announced in 2024, includes plans for a Hydrogen Resource Centre in collaboration with IIT-Madras. This initiative aims to lay the groundwork for hydrogen infrastructure, a critical factor for the Nexo’s success.

Posts on X from April 2, 2025, following the Seoul Mobility Show, highlight the Nexo’s upgraded specs and global buzz, with Hyundai India actively engaging in the conversation. The company has not officially confirmed the November 2025 launch date, but industry insiders and media reports, including those from CarBike360 and GaadiWaadi, point to this timeline, aligning with Hyundai’s aggressive push into alternative fuel technologies.

Challenges and Opportunities in India
Priced internationally at around $62,000-$65,000 (₹50-55 lakh), the Nexo is expected to debut in India at an ex-showroom price of approximately ₹65 lakh, likely as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) import. This positions it in the premium SUV segment, competing with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLB, BMW X3, and Kia EV6—though it stands alone as the first hydrogen-powered offering in the country. Its primary challenge remains infrastructure: India currently lacks a widespread network of hydrogen refueling stations, limiting its practicality to select urban centers or pilot projects.

However, the Indian government’s reduced duties on hydrogen vehicles and growing emphasis on green energy could pave the way for the Nexo. Hyundai’s collaboration with local stakeholders to develop refueling stations, coupled with its Tamil Nadu investment, signals a long-term vision. The Nexo’s range—potentially exceeding 1,000 km in Indian conditions, per Hyundai’s claims—offers a compelling alternative to BEVs, especially for long-distance travel.

Market Context and Hyundai’s Strategy
India’s electric vehicle market is booming, with sales crossing 1.5 million units in FY24, yet hydrogen technology remains nascent. The Nexo’s launch could serve as a proof-of-concept, appealing to early adopters, eco-conscious buyers, and government fleets. Hyundai’s broader strategy includes expanding its EV lineup—models like the Ioniq 6 and Venue EV are also slated for 2025-2026—while positioning the Nexo as a premium, futuristic offering. “We’re committed to zero-emission mobility,” said S S Kim, MD and CEO of Hyundai Motor India, in a 2019 statement that still resonates with the company’s current trajectory.

Conclusion
The Hyundai Nexo’s anticipated launch in November 2025 could herald a new era of sustainable mobility in India. With its sleek design, advanced tech, and hydrogen-powered efficiency, it promises to blend environmental responsibility with practical luxury. While challenges like infrastructure development loom large, Hyundai’s proactive steps and global expertise in FCEVs inspire optimism. As India races toward a greener future, the Nexo might just be the spark that ignites a hydrogen revolution on its roads.
