Amul Hikes Milk Prices by Rs 2 per Litre from May 1, Following Mother Dairy

As of today, May 1, 2025, Amul, India’s leading dairy brand, has raised milk prices by Rs 2 per litre across all variants, aligning with a similar move by Mother Dairy on April 30. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets Amul products, announced the hike to address rising production and operational costs, effective from this morning. This adjustment impacts popular variants like Amul Gold, Amul Taaza, Amul Slim n Trim, and Amul Buffalo Milk, adding to consumer expenses amid ongoing economic pressures.

The decision follows Mother Dairy’s Rs 2 per litre increase, citing a dip in milk production due to a severe heatwave in the Delhi-NCR region. Amul’s Managing Director, Jayen Mehta, noted that the hike, representing a 3-4% rise in maximum retail price (MRP), remains below the current food inflation rate. In Gujarat, a 500ml pouch of Amul Gold now costs Rs 34, while Amul Shakti is priced at Rs 31. The last price revision was in June 2024, and this move aims to sustain remunerative prices for farmers amidst escalating input costs.

Consumer reactions are mixed, with some expressing concerns over affordability, especially as dairy inflation has hovered around 9% since last year. However, Amul emphasizes that 80 paise of every rupee spent on milk goes to producers, supporting rural livelihoods. As the industry adjusts, experts suggest monitoring digital payment trends, with UPI transactions rising 15% in 2025, potentially easing cash reliance.
