Tragedy Strikes: Six Dead and Over 100 Injured in Bihar Train Derailment

Buxar, Bihar – In a shocking incident, the Delhi-Kamakhya North East Express derailed near Raghunathpur station in Bihar’s Buxar district late Wednesday night (October 11), resulting in six tragic fatalities and leaving more than 100 passengers injured. - Loss of Lives and Injuries: As per reports by The Hindustan Times, six passengers have lost their lives in the derailment. Around 100 individuals have sustained injuries, with over 12 coaches derailing. Hospitals in Ara, Buxar, and Patna, including PMCH, AIIMS, and IGIMS, have been put on standby to provide medical care to the injured.
- Swift Medical Response: Buxar Superintendent of Police, Manish Kumar, confirmed that the injured passengers have been promptly shifted to local hospitals. Those with severe injuries have been rushed to AIIMS, Patna.
- Government’s Response: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed condolences for the loss of lives and assured that an investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the derailment. He reported that evacuation and rescue operations had been completed, and all coaches had been thoroughly checked. A coordinated rescue operation is underway, with the participation of NDRF, SDRF, district administration, railway officials, and local residents.
- Journey Details: The ill-fated 12506 North East Express, consisting of 23 coaches, departed from Anand Vihar terminal in Delhi at 7:40 am on Wednesday for its nearly 33-hour journey to Kamakhya, located around six kilometers away from Guwahati.
- Eyewitness Accounts: A local resident, Hari Pathak, described the incident, stating that the train was traveling at a normal speed when a loud noise and plume of smoke signaled the derailment. AC coaches were among the most damaged.

- Damages and Investigation: Jagdishpur SDPO Rajiv Chandra Singh mentioned that the accident resulted in damage to electric wires, poles, and rail tracks. Fortunately, none of the coaches overturned, contributing to fewer casualties. The technical team is expected to provide further insights into the accident’s cause.
- Location of Derailment: Chief Public Relations Officer of East Central Railway zone, Birendra Kumar, stated that the derailment occurred less than half an hour after the train’s departure from Buxar station, en route to Ara. The incident took place near Raghunathpur station, where the train does not have a scheduled stop.
- Assam CM’s Concern: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his concern over the derailment and is closely monitoring the situation, in contact with local authorities and agencies.
- Immediate Relief Efforts: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav instructed the disaster management and health departments to initiate quick relief measures. Medical officers and health workers are ready for rescue and relief operations at Sub-Divisional Hospital Jagdishpur and Shahpur Hospital, District Bhojpur. Ambulances from Rohtas, Buxar, and Bhojpur districts have been dispatched to the site.
- Passenger Assistance: The railways have implemented measures to transport passengers to their intended destinations.
