Mumbai:
As parts of Maharashtra, including Greater Mumbai, are currently experiencing a heatwave, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued important guidelines for residents to stay safe and prevent heat-related health issues. This announcement comes after the India Meteorological Department’s forecast indicated that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist until March 11, with similar conditions expected in the coming months of March and April.
BMC Issues Heatwave Guidelines Amid Rising Temperatures in Mumbai
The BMC released a set of “Do’s and Don’ts” for residents, in line with recommendations from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), urging citizens to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the extreme heat.
Key Guidelines Issued by BMC:
- Stay Hydrated:
The BMC advises all residents to drink plenty of water, even if they do not feel thirsty. Staying hydrated is essential to combat the effects of the heat. - Wear Appropriate Clothing:
Residents should wear light, loose-fitting, and breathable cotton clothes to allow air circulation and reduce discomfort caused by high temperatures. - Use Protective Gear:
Wearing sunglasses, comfortable footwear, and carrying an umbrella when stepping out is recommended to shield oneself from the sun. - Avoid Dehydrating Drinks:
The civic body cautioned against consuming alcohol, tea, coffee, or cold drinks, as these beverages can lead to dehydration, which worsens the effects of the heatwave. - Recognizing Heatstroke Symptoms:
The BMC advised that in the event of a heatstroke, the affected person should be moved to a cool place or shaded area immediately. The body temperature should be reduced by wiping the person with a wet cloth or washing their body frequently with water. Pouring normal-temperature water on the head can also help bring down body heat. - Rehydration:
It’s crucial to offer the affected person oral rehydration solutions (ORS), lime water, or any drink that helps replenish fluids and electrolytes. If the person does not show signs of improvement, they should be rushed to the nearest health center or hospital as untreated heatstroke can be fatal.
Precautionary Measures:
- The BMC emphasized the importance of following these tips to avoid heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses, especially with the ongoing heatwave conditions.
- Frequent heatwaves are expected to occur more often during March and April, making it essential for citizens to remain vigilant about the heat’s effects and take steps to protect themselves.
Conclusion:
The BMC’s guidelines serve as a timely reminder for all Mumbai residents to take proactive steps during this heatwave, especially since high temperatures can lead to serious health consequences like heatstroke. The civic body has urged citizens to follow these precautionary measures carefully to prevent any adverse effects during this scorching period.
