According to PitchBook’s 2026 University Rankings for Entrepreneurs, several Indian institutions feature prominently for the number of founders associated with venture-capital-backed companies.

- 🇮🇳 IIT Delhi — 640 founders
- 🇮🇳 IIT Madras — 447 founders
- 🇮🇳 IIT Kharagpur — 434 founders

- 🇮🇳 Delhi University — 366 founders
- 🇮🇳 University of Mumbai — 339 founders

IIT Bombay Leads the List
IIT Bombay tops the list with 756 VC-backed founders, putting it significantly ahead of other Indian institutions.
IIT Delhi follows with 640 founders, while IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur round out the top five with 447, 434 and 428 founders, respectively.
The numbers highlight the strong connection between India’s premier educational institutions and the country’s growing venture-backed startup ecosystem.
Universities Beyond the IIT Network Also Make an Impact
The list is not limited to the Indian Institutes of Technology. Delhi University ranks sixth with 366 founders, followed by the University of Mumbai with 339.
BITS Pilani, with 265 founders, also makes the list, demonstrating the contribution of institutions beyond the IIT system to India’s entrepreneurial landscape.
