A highly esteemed enterprise providing Cover Story Nano-Biotech solutions for in situ wastewater treatment, solid waste, and agriculture.
JS Group has emerged as a leading institution in leveraging Nano and Biotechnologies for rejuvenating deeply polluted rivers, drains, wetlands, lakes, and ponds. The technologies provide solutions for the most aggressive form of pollution that harms aquatic life or adversely affects aquatic biodiversity. The tech also mitigates waterborne pathogens, prevents vector breeding, mitigates algal blooms, reduces heavy metals, degrades benthic sludge biologically, and eliminates regrowth of water hyacinths.
Concurrently, the Company has also developed nano biotechnologies for accelerated degradation of solid waste found in great amounts in our landfills. The degradation process is altered in a way that there is no release of toxic gases and foul smell. Interestingly, the tech works even in cold temperatures like we experience in the hill states. Founded in 2010, JS Group has grown from a single company to a conglomerate of three specialized entities: JS Water Energy Life, JS Aquaritin Global Co. and Bioritin Biosciences Co. Co..
The group has made a major impact in India and around the world by carving out a niche for itself in cutting-edge Nanobiotech solutions, driven by a vision of sustainable water management and environmental conservation. Mr. Sunil Nanda is the Managing Director of the company, steering the wheels of its global operations. He is a former Navy officer who strived to make an impact on his nation’s well-being in a different way after his retirement. In an enlightening interview, Mr. Nanda shed light on his journey of elevating his venture’s name to the top of the industry and their journey over the last 15 years.
Evolution of JS Group
The parent company, JS Water Energy Life, is at the forefront of river pollution control initiatives. Their reputation is not limited to India; they have also worked on successful projects globally, such as in America, Malaysia, etc. The second company, JS Aquaritin Global Co., specializes in producing cutting-edge water treatment solutions that are the result of extensive study. In this impressive journey, 87% of its output is exported, with the US being a significant market. In the meantime, Bioritin Biosciences Co.
leads the way in the creation of novel microbial technologies, offering state-of-the-art approaches to environmental and water restoration. For the farming community, the Group has developed many non-chemical solutions that can change the face of Indian agriculture. It has also developed solutions at the nano level for saline, sodic, and carbon-depleted soils. “Our target is to develop nano-scale products that can reduce salinity in irrigation waters and saline/sodic soils substantially and we are very close to it,’ he said.
Innovation in Advanced Nanobiotech Solutions
As per Mr. Nanda, their innovations are the sheer results of their concern for the deteriorating water and soil quality. “An urgent demand for efficient river rejuvenation techniques motivated JS Group to venture into Nanobiotech solutions. The organization developed a method to treat contaminated waterways in real-time after realizing the shortcomings of traditional sewage treatment facilities,” shared Mr. Nanda.
Before this groundbreaking model achieved breakthrough success, it underwent over six years of intensive study and development, with several setbacks. Aquaritin and Bioritin, the company’s flagship offerings, are prime examples of their scientific breakthroughs. Whereas Bioritin uses microbial and enzymatic formulations based on biotechnology for water treatment, Aquaritin uses nano-nutrient technology. Together, these solutions work synergistically to clean polluted water bodies, proving highly effective in diverse environmental conditions.
Overcoming Challenges and Global Recognition
Developing groundbreaking products was just the first hurdle; gaining market acceptance posed another significant challenge. Traditional regulatory frameworks often resist novel technologies, especially in India, where bureaucratic processes favor established methods. To counter this, JS Group adopted an international-first strategy, successfully introducing its solutions in the U.S. market before bringing them back to India. This approach not only validated their technology but also increased its credibility and demand.
A significant milestone in JS Group’s journey is their ongoing project in Punjab, where they are revitalizing the erstwhile rivers/streams that have been turned into drains. In one such case, a severely polluted water channel that was causing distress to local farmers has been revived. The water quality has been restored to Pollution Control Board standards and the farmers are drawing water for irrigating their crops without any hesitation. The intervention has also brought back aquatic life and birds back to the ecosystem.
The Future: Cleaning India’s Iconic Rivers
India’s water crisis is always going to be a topic for debate. Our precious rivers have concerning conditions that need the government’s active intervention. However, JS Group is now prepared to tackle its most ambitious challenge: cleaning the Yamuna River. After proving its capabilities in international projects, the company asserts that, given one year, it can restore the Delhi stretch of the Yamuna to pristine conditions. In this regard, they are in touch with the government authorities to come in accord to remediate the Yamuna River as well as the large drains that discharge wastewater into the sacred river.
We just need ONE YEAR to turn the Yamuna Delhi segment into what it looked like in mid 1980s, the MD said. To further this mission, JS Group has entered a collaboration with India’s leading IIT at Roorkee. This partnership aims to bring unprecedented innovation to India’s river rejuvenation efforts, addressing not just pollution but also the severe health hazards linked to contaminated water. It aims to remediate polluted rivers in India and overseas as well.
A Vision for a Sustainable Future
JS Group’s impact extends beyond business; it is a testament to scientific perseverance and environmental responsibility. By blending nanotechnology with biotechnology, they are not just treating polluted rivers but also offering hope for a cleaner, healthier future. Their journey, marked by relentless innovation and global recognition, stands as an inspiring example of how cutting-edge science can solve some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
