Latest News on the Gulf of Mexico

In the United States, the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed “google Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America.” As we mentioned two weeks ago, and in accordance with our long-standing procedures, we have began rolling out adjustments to reflect this update. People using maps in the United States will see “Gulf of America,” while those in Mexico would see “Gulf of Mexico.” Everyone will see both names.

The names you see in the Maps app are based on your national location, which is determined by information from your phone’s operating system (for example, iOS and Android), such as your SIM card, network, and locale. If you’re using Google Maps on the web, the names are determined by the area you’ve chosen in your Search options or, if you haven’t, your device’s current location.
