Reliance shares posted their best day in over six years after blowout Q2 numbers, and Ambani’s fortune climbed 7.85% in a single session.
Mukesh Ambani had the best Monday of any billionaire on the planet. According to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires list, the Reliance Industries chairman added about $6.3 billion to his net worth in one day, the biggest gain anywhere in the world in the 2 November update. His estimated wealth now stands at roughly $88.8 billion.
The Numbers at a Glance
- Gain: about $6.3 billion in a single day, or 7.85%
- Estimated net worth: around $88.8 billion (Forbes real-time)
- World rank: No. 23, and the richest Indian
- Reliance share price: up 11.6% on Monday, closing at ₹1,300 against ₹1,164.90 the previous session
- Market context: the stock’s strongest session in more than six years and the top gainer on the Nifty 50
Far Ahead of the Pack
The gap between Ambani and the rest of the daily gainers was wide. Spanish retail magnate Amancio Ortega came second, adding roughly $1.7 billion, followed by China’s Zhong Shanshan with about $1.5 billion. In other words, Ambani gained nearly four times as much as the runner-up.
The jump also reshuffled the Indian leaderboard. Gautam Adani is ranked No. 26 on the same list with an estimated fortune of about $79.12 billion, putting Ambani comfortably ahead as India’s richest person.
What Moved the Stock
The trigger was Reliance’s September-quarter report, released on Friday, 30 October. Investors had been expecting a net profit of around ₹21,400 crore. The company delivered far more.
Consolidated net profit attributable to shareholders rose about 41% year on year to ₹25,548 crore, up from ₹18,165 crore in the same quarter last year. Operating profit (EBITDA) increased 24% to ₹62,409 crore. Margins also improved slightly.
The oil-to-chemicals (O2C) business did most of the heavy lifting. Its revenue grew roughly 44% on the back of higher energy prices, while its EBITDA surged 68% to ₹25,203 crore. Jio Platforms, the digital arm, also contributed, reporting a profit after tax of ₹8,387 crore, up about 14%.
Not everything was rosy. Reliance Retail’s net profit fell about 24% to ₹2,611 crore even though revenue rose 5.8% to ₹80,220 crore, a reminder that the rally was driven mainly by energy rather than consumer businesses.
In his comments on the results, Ambani said the businesses delivered a strong performance despite a complex operating environment, pointing to volatile commodity markets and geopolitical tensions that continue to strain global supply chains.
Why a Share Price Move Shifts a Fortune
Ambani’s wealth is closely tied to Reliance because he and his family hold a large stake in the company, so a double-digit share price move translates directly into billions on paper. That is why a profit surprise on Friday could show up as a record-setting wealth gain on Monday.
It is worth remembering that these figures are estimates. Real-time billionaire rankings recalculate holdings against live market prices, so they can change from one update to the next, and Forbes and Bloomberg often show different totals for the same person.
What to Watch Next
Market watchers will be looking at whether the rally holds or fades as investors digest the results. Three things matter most: how long energy prices stay elevated, whether Reliance Retail’s margins recover, and how Jio Platforms performs after its recent market debut, which the company described as a defining event of the quarter. For now, though, the verdict from the market is clear: a very good quarter has made India’s richest man a lot richer.
