PM Modi Embarks on Strategic Visits to Thailand and Sri Lanka to Bolster Regional Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a pivotal two-nation tour to Thailand and Sri Lanka from April 3 to 6, 2025, aiming to strengthen regional ties and participate in significant multilateral engagements.

PM Modi Embarks on Strategic Visits to Thailand and Sri Lanka to Bolster Regional Cooperation

Engagements in Thailand:
On April 3, PM Modi will arrive in Bangkok at the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. This visit marks his third trip to Thailand and underscores the deep-rooted maritime and cultural connections between the two nations.

A key highlight of the visit is India’s participation in the 6th BIMSTEC Summit on April 4. Themed “BIMSTEC – Prosperous, Resilient and Open,” this summit represents the first in-person meeting of BIMSTEC leaders since 2018. Discussions will focus on enhancing regional cooperation in areas such as security, trade, investment, and connectivity.

Visit to Sri Lanka:
Following the engagements in Thailand, PM Modi will undertake a State Visit to Sri Lanka from April 4 to 6, at the invitation of President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka. This marks his first visit to Sri Lanka since 2019 and is part of ongoing high-level exchanges aimed at deepening the multifaceted partnership between the two countries.

During the visit, PM Modi will hold discussions with President Dissanayaka to review progress on areas of cooperation outlined in the “Joint Vision for Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future.” Additionally, he will inaugurate development projects in Anuradhapura that have been implemented with Indian financial assistance, highlighting India’s commitment to Sri Lanka’s socio-economic development.

Strategic Significance:
PM Modi’s tour underscores India’s dedication to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘Act East’ policies, as well as the ‘MAHASAGAR’ (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision. These initiatives aim to foster regional integration, economic growth, and collective security in the Indo-Pacific region.

As the global landscape evolves, such diplomatic engagements are crucial for promoting stability, prosperity, and collaborative development among neighboring countries.
