In 1971, Tata was named Director-in-Charge of the National Radio and Electronics Company Limited (NELCO), which was in desperate need of resuscitation, and he successfully turned it around.

During his time, he merged all Tata enterprises, purchased numerous companies, notably Tetley and Jaguar Land Rover, and listed Tata Motors on the New York Stock Exchange, bringing the company international recognition.

India acquired its first indigenously made vehicle, the Indica, and its first compact car, the Nano, during his leadership. Tata’s Nano, the world’s most cost-effective automobile, was developed when the company became worried about the safety of nuclear families traveling by two-wheeler.

He had several failures during his career, however in 1998, he launched the Tata Indica Car. Unfortunately, the automobile failed to attract buyer interest, prompting the board and committee members to recommend that Ratan Tata sell the vehicle to Ford. After knowing this, he returned to Mumbai without signing the contract. This word did not depress him, but rather boosted his self-assurance. With his passion and dedication, he hoped to overcome the critics. Tata Indica was profitable after a few years, and Ford Company released two luxury automobiles, Jaguar and Land Rover, at the same time. However, Ford Company suffered a loss at the time. The tables were turned, and Ratan Tata proposed to the Ford Motor Company.

He stated that he was willing to purchase these automobiles. He ordered the Ford Chairman and members of the committee to travel to Mumbai to finalize the transaction. As a result, he purchased Ford’s Jaguar and Land Rover divisions and later profited from them. This was his silent revenge for the setback he had suffered.
