Tata Group: Driving Global Expansion, Leading IT Innovation, and Empowering Communities

Tata Group is one of India’s most prominent and influential conglomerates. It has a strong presence in diverse business sectors and earned over 120 billion USD in revenue in 2023. For the most recent quarter (Q3 FY 2024-25), Tata Communications reported a gross revenue of INR 5,798 crore (approximately USD 700 million).

How It All Started for Tata

Tata Group was founded by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in 1868, and he started it as a trading company with a capital of ₹21,000. Jamsetji envisioned establishing India’s first iron and steel company, a world-class hotel, a learning institution, and a hydroelectric plant.

In 1870, Jamsetji founded Alexandra Mill, a cotton mill he later sold for a profit. He established another cotton mill, Empress Mill, in 1874. After he died in 1904, his son Dorabji Tata continued his legacy by establishing Tata Iron and Steel Company (now Tata Steel) in 1907.

Jamsetji’s dream of a world-class hotel was realised with the opening of the Taj Mahal Hotel in 1903, the first hotel in India with electricity.

Now, Jamsjeti has also always believed that education was a crucial element for the progress of individuals and society. So, in 1909, Dorabji established the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). He donated half his wealth to set up this premier institute for scientific research and higher learning.

Here’s a deeper look at Tata Group’s involvement in education:

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR): This was founded in 1945 by Homi J Bhabha and JRD Tata. TIFR became the cradle of India’s atomic energy program.

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS): Established in 1936 as the Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, it was rechristened as TISS in 1944. It has since been a pioneer in social work education in the Asia-Pacific region.

National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA): IN 1969, JRD Tata worked with Dr. Jamshed J Bhabha to establish NCPA, India’s premier cultural institution. This was to help promote Indian and international performing arts.

Masti Ki Pathshala: Launched by Tata Steel, this program provides a residential bridge course for the all-around development of street children and labourers in Jamshedpur.

Titan Kanya: This flagship CSR program by Titan was launched in 2013, and it focuses on the education and well-being of economically and socially disadvantaged girls in partnership with Project Nanhi Kali and IIMPACT.

Ignite My Future in School: TCS launched this program in 2017 in partnership with Discovery Education to embed computational thinking into core subjects and prepare students for success in the 21st century.

The company eventually got into locomotives in 1945, also with the help of JRD Tata. They started as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO).

At first, this sector of their business was focused on producing engineering goods and locomotives. Still, in 1954, it entered the commercial vehicle market through a joint venture with the German corporation Daimler-Benz. This led to the production of Tata’s first commercial vehicle, a Daimler lorry.

During the ’90s, they rolled out more vehicle products, including the Tata Indica (1998), India’s first indigenously developed passenger car. TELO rebranded as Tata Motors in 2003, and in 2008, they acquired the British automotive brand Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) from Ford Motor Company (for $2.3 billion).

Steel, automotive, IT, chemicals, aviation, and hospitality are just a few industries in which the Tata Group is currently involved. They employ over 750,000 people worldwide and run over 100 businesses in more than 100 countries.

Tata’s Partnership with the Indian Premier League

In 2022, Tata also started to involve itself in sports by being the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL), India’s largest sports tournament. They only signed a two-year partnership (2022 and 2023 seasons), but in January 2024, they decided to renew their contract.

It was a record-breaking deal valued at INR 2500 crore (approximately USD 300.7 million). This makes Tata the most expensive sponsor in the league’s history, which will be the case until 2028.

Philanthropy

Tata Group is known for its philanthropic efforts through the Tata Trusts. This focuses on education, healthcare, rural development, and environmental sustainability.

Tata Trusts have significantly contributed to healthcare by supporting infrastructure development and medical research and establishing world-class facilities like the Tata Medical Center, which offers advanced cancer care.

They also tackle malnutrition through nutrition-sensitive agricultural practices and promote breastfeeding. Tata is also set to partner with IISc to establish a new medical school, with a contribution of ₹500 crore.

Rural development initiatives include skilling programs, livelihood projects, and digital literacy plans to empower underprivileged and marginalised groups. Tata Trusts also focuses on environmental sustainability, supporting greening initiatives and preserving biodiversity.

In the End

Based on recent reports, Tata is still heavily investing in digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT). They are also looking to launch more electronic vehicles, which is a testament to their commitment to sustainability.
