In a significant stride towards revolutionizing India’s electric vehicle (EV) landscape, Vietnamese EV giant VinFast is set to inaugurate its first integrated EV manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, by the end of June 2025. Announced over a year ago, this ambitious project underscores VinFast’s commitment to sustainable mobility and positions India as a key hub in its global expansion strategy.
VinFast Accelerates India Expansion with Tamil Nadu EV Plant Set for June 2025 Opening
Spanning 400 acres within the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) industrial estate, the facility is 90% complete and poised to commence operations within the next two to three months. With an initial investment of USD 500 million for the first phase and a total planned outlay of USD 2 billion, the plant is designed to produce up to 150,000 vehicles annually. This development is expected to generate 3,000–3,500 local jobs, boosting Tamil Nadu’s economy and reinforcing its status as an emerging automotive hub.
VinFast’s Thoothukudi plant will not only cater to India’s growing EV demand but also serve as an export hub for markets in West Asia and Africa, leveraging the region’s strategic proximity to seaports. The facility will include battery manufacturing and support the development of a robust charging infrastructure through V-Green, a VinFast group company seeking co-investors.
At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, VinFast unveiled its premium electric SUVs, the VF 7 and VF 6, set to hit Indian roads in the second half of 2025. These launches signal VinFast’s intent to capture the premium EV segment with competitive pricing and advanced technology. The company is also establishing a nationwide dealership network to enhance brand visibility and customer engagement.
“VinFast’s rapid progress in Tamil Nadu reflects our dedication to sustainable mobility and economic growth in India,” said Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast India. Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister, Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa, echoed this sentiment, noting that Thoothukudi is emerging as the state’s fourth major auto-cluster, strengthening its position in India’s automotive sector.
As VinFast accelerates towards its June 2025 target, it joins global players like Tesla in eyeing India’s burgeoning EV market. With strong governmental support and a focus on localization, VinFast is poised to drive India’s green transportation revolution forward.
