Virat Kohli Bids Farewell to Test Cricket: A Legendary Era Ends

By Business Connect Magazine | May 12, 2025

In a heartfelt announcement that has left the cricketing world in awe, Virat Kohli, India’s cricketing maestro, has retired from Test cricket, marking the end of a glorious 14-year journey. On May 12, 2025, the 36-year-old took to Instagram, sharing an emotional note: “It’s not easy — but it feels right… #269, signing off,” referring to his Test cap number. This decision, coming days after Rohit Sharma’s Test retirement, signals a seismic shift for Indian cricket as it prepares for a five-match series against England in June.

Kohli’s Test career is nothing short of legendary. Debuting against the West Indies in 2011, he played 123 matches, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, with 30 centuries and 31 fifties. His seven double centuries and 20 centuries as captain are Indian records, cementing his status as one of the game’s greats. Leading India in 68 Tests, Kohli secured 40 victories, making him the country’s most successful Test captain.

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life,” Kohli wrote. Despite recent struggles, including a lean 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy where he averaged 23.75, his impact on Test cricket remains unparalleled.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly urged Kohli to reconsider, given his experience and the upcoming England tour. However, Kohli stood firm, choosing to focus on One-Day Internationals (ODIs) after retiring from T20 Internationals last year.

As Indian cricket transitions, with youngsters like Shubman Gill eyed for leadership, Kohli’s departure leaves a void at number four. Fans and former players, including Pragyan Ojha and Kevin Pietersen, have hailed his legacy, with the BCCI tweeting, “Thank you, Virat Kohli! An era ends, but the legacy will continue FOREVER!”

Kohli’s #269 will forever symbolize his grit, passion, and love for the whites. As he steps away, the cricketing world salutes a true icon.
