Miss Universe pageant to allow mothers & married women to participate from 2023
In a landmark decision, the prestigious Miss Universe pageant is all set to allow married women to participate. The Miss Universe pageant is expanding eligibility for its contest by allowing mothers and married women to enter.

The beauty pageant previously only allowed unmarried women between the ages of 18 and 28 to participate in the contest. The rules of the Miss Universe pageant always require that the winner be single and maintain their status as such throughout their reign as the title. Mothers have also historically been excluded and winners are usually required to avoid becoming pregnant while serving as Miss Universe.
The international beauty pageant has finally agreed to abolish all of these restrictions by allowing mothers and married women to compete in the Miss Universe Pageantstarting in 2023. Andrea Meza, who represented Mexico and was crowned Miss Universe 2020, applauded the new regulation.
She said in an interview with Insider, “I honestly love that this is happening. As society changes and women are now occupying leadership positions where in the past only men could, it was time the competitions changed and opened up to women with families.” Meanwhile, Mexico’s 2020 Miss Universe has criticized existing guidelines for being “sexist” and “unrealistic” in its effort to choose a winner who will appeal to the largest possible audience.
“Some people are against these changes because they always wanted to see a beautiful woman who is available for a relationship,” Meza said. “They always wanted to see a woman who looked so perfect from the outside that she was almost out of reach. The first one is sexist and the second one is unrealistic.”
India’s Harnaaz Sandhu was named Miss Universe 2021. Punjab native Harnaaz Sandhu represented India at the 70th Miss Universe 2021 competition in Eilat, Israel. Only two Indian women had previously won the Miss Universe crown: the actors Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000. The Miss Universe pageant is broadcast in over 160 territories and countries around the world, including the United States on FYI and Telemundo.
