Microsoft Launches Its Smallest ‘Phi-3 Mini’ AI Model

Microsoft launched the world’s smallest and lightest Artificial Intelligence model, Phi-3 Mini, which is from the Phi series of Microsoft on Tuesday, April 24, 2024. Especially made for smartphones, giving direct competition to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other AI models.

It is the first small language models (SLM) based AI model to be launched by the company. Apart from being the smallest and lightest it is 10x more cheaper than the available AI models which makes it accessible to a wide variety of clients.
Sébastien Bubeck, Microsoft’s vice president of GenAI research said,
“Phi-3 is not slightly cheaper, it’s dramatically cheaper, we’re talking about a 10x cost difference compared to the other models out there with similar capabilities”.
Additionally he said, “We started this journey a year ago now of trying to build small language models, trying to see, you know, how far you can go with maybe just 1 billion parameters”.
Microsoft has been designing a number of SLMs that will offer similar competencies as of Large Language Models (LMMs), the only difference being they are smaller in size and are trained using a lesser amount of data. SLMs are mainly designed to break down tasks into simpler units for easy performance, making it easy to use by companies with limited resources.
As per the company officials Phi-3-mini will be available by the coming month on the Microsoft Cloud Service Platform, It will also available on Nvidia Interference Microservices (NIM) new tab software tool of Nvidia (MCDA.O) and has also been optimized for Nvidia’s graphic processing units (GPUs).
