ITC Inaugurated Its First International Property In Colombo: Plans To Expand

ITC Hotel group on Thursday, April 25, 2024 inaugurated its first property abroad ITC Ratnadipa, located a few minutes’ drive away from Geoffrey Bawa’s Heritage House in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Taking to the social networking site ITC Hotels announced the inauguration of the newly constructed hotel ITC Ratnadipa through a post on X,

“We are thrilled to announce the grand opening of ITC Ratnadipa, Colombo, the new icon of luxury in the city’s landscape. The grandest luxury hotel in town that brings ITC Hotels’ legendary hospitality to the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.

With unrivalled views of the Indian Ocean and the Beira Lake, its rooms offer a unique perspective of Colombo. Featuring a curation of the finest global and local cuisines, the hotel’s culinary destinations are set to craft memorable gourmet experiences.

The next time you are in the city, join the celebration of the finest of Sri Lanka and beyond”.

As Sri Lankan president Ranil Wickremesinghe said at the launch: “All these hotel brands in one line are now a symbol of Colombo, and the presence of ITC is symbolic of India’s commitment to Sri Lanka.” This was echoed by Indian high commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha as he said, “India is an economic partner of Sri Lanka, and such investments are emblematic of India’s support to Sri Lanka, through thick or thin.”

The project was started in 2017 after the foundation was established in 2014 under the leadership of the then Sri Lankan PM Dinesh Gunewardena . The hotel has been built under ITC’s Sri Lankan subsidiary unit WelcomeHotels with a total cost of $500 million.

This is the largest investment made by the Kolkata based conglomerate, with 352 guest rooms, suites and service apartments, the hotel is located near the sea on 5.86 acres of land. The hotel is focusing to attract MICE with conferencing and banquet facilities and inbound tourism from the neighbouring countries.

In the last two years ITC has opened 22 properties and is looking to expand into the global hospitality industry, with a target to establish 200 properties in the coming five years with 25 properties under construction, which will be completed in the coming two years.

In an interview ITC Chairman and MD, Sanjiv Puri said, the company is focusing to expand into the Nepal and West Asia.

Adding he said,“We will be open to exploring opportunities across that come about. Because I think we have strong credentials in hospitality and that we can take outside India now”.
