India Aims High: 5,000 Unicorns on the Horizon, Says Piyush Goyal

In an ambitious move, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that the Indian government has set its sights on fostering 5,000 unicorns in the country. This bold target is part of India’s efforts to bolster its startup ecosystem and cement its position as a global hub for innovation.

A Thriving Startup Ecosystem
India’s startup ecosystem has been thriving, with the country already home to 119 unicorns and 31 listed new-age tech ventures. Indian startups have raised over $150 billion in funding between 2014 and 2024, with Gujarat emerging as the best-performing state in startups .

Government Support for Startups
The government has been actively supporting startups through various initiatives, including the Startup India program, which was launched in 2016. The program aims to nurture innovation and catalyze the growth of startups across the country. Additionally, the government has launched several funds to support startups, including a Fund of Funds (FoF) for startups with a corpus of Rs 10,000 crore.

Encouraging Entrepreneurship
Goyal emphasized the importance of entrepreneurship in driving economic growth and encouraged young entrepreneurs to create people-centric models of development through their startup ideas. He also urged them not to be afraid of failure, stating that the mantra of a startup is to rise from failure and become successful.

A Bright Future Ahead
With the government’s support and the thriving startup ecosystem, India is poised to become a global hub for innovation. The target of fostering 5,000 unicorns may seem ambitious, but with the country’s entrepreneurial spirit and the government’s initiatives, it’s definitely achievable.
