In an internal circular, India Post stated that the Registered Post service will merge with Speed Post on September 1, 2025, marking the end of one of its oldest services.
The goal of this significant shift, according to the circular dated July 2, 2025, is to “deliver greater customer convenience by consolidating similar services under a unified framework” and simplify the mail service.
What do Speed Post and Registered Post mean?
In order to ensure security, registered post, also known as secure post, only delivers to the intended recipient. Speed Post is address-specific, meaning that anybody at the specified address can pick up the mail, and it prioritizes time-bound delivery.
Even though it is slower, Registered Post has been around for a while and is thought to be more economical than Speed Post.
Decline of Registered Post
Official postal data shows a consistent yearly decline in the use of Registered Post since 2011-12, the earliest year for which data was available to BCM.
Prior to the pandemic, the number of registered goods had already decreased by over 25%, from 244.4 million (24 crore) in 2011–12 to 184.6 million (18 crore) in 2019–20.
How does secure delivery fare?
Officials stress that this is not the end in the traditional sense. “Registered Post will not be shut down. It will still be accessible, but as a Speed Post registration facility,” a Department of Posts official informed BCM.
For instance, you spend an additional ₹17 if you wish to register after sending an inland letter card that costs ₹2.50. In the same way, after registering, a ₹5 letter becomes ₹22. Speed Post, which has existed since 1986, will now provide this choice, the official stated.
According to the circular, “by combining related services under a single framework, the initiative seeks to improve tracking mechanisms, streamline mail services, increase operational efficiency, and provide greater customer convenience.”
