The Election Commission is scheduled to announce the schedule for the Bihar Assembly elections today at 4 PM. The poll panel will make the announcement from Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, according to an official statement.
Bihar Poll Schedule Update: Election Dates to Be Revealed Today
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had earlier confirmed that elections for all 243 seats in Bihar would be completed before November 22, when the current Assembly’s term expires. Several political parties have requested the Commission to schedule the polls immediately after Chhath Puja, which falls at the end of October, aiming to ensure higher voter turnout, as many residents working in other states return home for the festivities.
During a press briefing, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced that the number of voters per polling station has been capped at 1,200. He also highlighted that the serial numbers and candidate photographs on ballots, which were previously in black and white, will now be printed in colour.
Responding to Opposition criticism over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, Kumar clarified that revising voter lists is a mandatory process before every election, and conducting a review after the polls would violate the law. Starting his address in Bhojpuri, he said:
“We congratulate the voters of India. Thank you to everyone for the successful SIR process. I appeal to all voters in Bihar to celebrate this festival of democracy with the same enthusiasm as you celebrate Chhath. Everyone should vote and ensure their participation.”
The upcoming Bihar Assembly elections are expected to see a direct face-off between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and the opposition ‘Mahagathbandhan’, led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Currently, the NDA holds 131 seats in the Assembly: BJP 80, JD(U) 45, HAM(S) 4, and 2 independents. The Opposition commands 111 seats: RJD 77, Congress 19, CPI(ML) 11, CPI(M) 2, and CPI 2.
Political activity in Bihar has intensified ahead of the Assembly elections, with the NDA and the Opposition actively campaigning and exchanging charges.
2020 Bihar Assembly Election
The 2020 Bihar Assembly polls were conducted in three phases amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The incumbent NDA emerged victorious, and Nitish Kumar took oath as Chief Minister.
However, in 2022, the JD(U) led by Kumar broke away from the NDA and formed the government in alliance with the RJD-led ‘Mahagathbandhan’.
