Few financial institutions manage to grow their business and stay true to a social mission at the same time. Belstar Microfinance is one of the exceptions. Operating in one of India’s most competitive financial markets, the company has expanded without losing sight of what matters most: responsible lending, customer trust, and women’s economic empowerment. Over the years, it has grown into a technology-enabled NBFC-MFI that combines strategic governance, digital capabilities, and a people-centric culture to deliver financial services that extend beyond credit.
Belstar Microfinance’s 18-Year Journey of Impact
As customer needs, technology, and regulations continue to shift, Belstar has stayed focused on one goal: building an institution that is both resilient and inclusive. That approach reflects a longterm commitment to creating real value for customers, employees, shareholders and the communities it serves.
From Kanchipuram to 55 Lakh Women: How it All Began
Dr. Kalpanaa Sankar, a nuclear scientist with dual doctorates, took over the institution intending to use financial inclusion as a tool for women’s economic independence. The early mandate was not limited to lending. It included building sustainable livelihoods and supporting social causes such as the eradication of child labour. Over the next 18 years, that mandate scaled.
Belstar has disbursed more than ₹43,296 crore and reached over 55 lakh women across India. The model focused on responsible finance as a means to entrepreneurship, higher household incomes, and broader community impact. A turning point came a decade ago when Muthoot Finance, one of India’s leading financial services groups, invested in Belstar.
The partnership provided capital and distribution strength while allowing the microfinance institution to retain its focus on underserved customers. That growth has been accompanied by institutional recognition. Belstar holds a CRISIL AA/Stable rating reflecting the institution’s financial strength, governance standards, and commitment to responsible lending.
It is Gold-level certified for Client Protection by MFR, and its Information Security Management System is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified. On the people side, the company has been certified as a Great Place to Work® for three consecutive years, and, for the second time, secured a place among India’s Top 50 Best Workplaces™ in BFSI and the Top 5 in India’s Best Workplaces™ in Microfinance.
Today, Belstar operates as one of India’s leading NBFCMFIs but its founding objective remains unchanged: to enable aspirations, create opportunities, and transform lives. This founding purpose continues to guide the team every day as they move forward.
Beyond the Loan: How Belstar Stands Out in Microfinance
Belstar Microfinance distinguished itself through a philosophy that extends beyond financial inclusion to long-term social empowerment. Guided by its purpose of “Lending Hope. Building Futures”, the company sees microfinance not just as access to credit but as a catalyst for helping underserved women build sustainable livelihoods, achieve financial independence, and empower their communities.
Recognising that a loan alone cannot ensure success, Belstar goes beyond lending by offering training, skill development, market linkages, and on-ground mentoring. This holistic approach enables customers to use credit more effectively, improve their earning potential, and create lasting economic stability for their families. Another key differentiator is its unwavering focus on customer welfare. Rather than treating lending as a transactional relationship, Belstar focuses on building long-term trust and supporting customers throughout their financial journey.
A Purpose-Driven Workplace
Belstar’s purpose-driven culture extends to its workforce and the organisation fosters an environment where employees feel respected, supported, and empowered to grow. As an organisation founded on the mission of women’s empowerment, it has also strengthened female representation within its field workforce.
Women account for more than 18% of the workforce, and play a significant role in driving business growth, strengthening customer relationships, and shaping the future of the organisation. With the combination of purpose-driven growth, customer-centricity, digital innovation, and a people-first culture, Belstar positions itself as an institution committed to creating sustainable value for the communities it serves.
Rest, Recalibrate, Grow: Belstar under J Balakrishnan
By 2025, the microfinance industry was in the midst of a prolonged period of stress , Growth had slowed, writeoffs were rising, disbursements had contracted, and portfolios across the industry were showing strain. For institutions that served the country’s most vulnerable borrowers, the margin for mistake had all but disappeared. In this environment, J. Balakrishnan took charge as the whole-time director & Chief Executive Officer at Belstar. His initial focus was not on scalability but on stability.
He saw the first year as an opportunity to reset, recalibrate, and emerge stronger. With SRO guardrails pushing the industry toward more responsible lending, Belstar strengthened its commitment to disciplined growth, sound portfolio quality, and long-term sustainability.
One of the initial steps J Balakrishnan took was to strengthen communication and engagement across the organisation. A monthly Captain’s Call was instituted to share business updates, recognise teams, and surface ideas from the field. Many of the operational improvements that followed were suggested directly by the employees. The premise was simple: in a business built on trust, consistency begins with the people who deliver it.
The results were measurable. In the second half of the year, the collection efficiency was above 99%, the portfolio quality improved, and Belstar remained profitable as of 31 March 2026 — a feat it has retained since inception. That achievement is considered a foundation.
The Road to 2030: Next Chapter of Growth
Belstar aspires to position itself among India’s top three microfinance institutions by 2030. The path is built on top-line growth rather than cost rationalisation alone. The team is focused on expanding the portfolio, deepening customer relationships, increasing revenue per customer, and diversifying into the gold loan vertical with plans to take that vertical to over 200 branches this year. J. Balakrishnan is confident that with the talented team, strong values, and unwavering commitment, Belstar will achieve its ambitions, create lasting impact in the communities it serves, and build a stronger, more diversified financial institution for the future.
The Real Test in Microfinance: Delivering Consistency
If one word defines the central challenges facing the microfinance industry in 2026, it is consistency. The sector operates at the intersection of multiple external forces like macroeconomic cycles, regional market dynamics, regulatory shifts, changing borrower behaviours, climatic events, and localised disruptions. While microfinance has seen a period of rapid growth, it has also endured phases of elevated loan and credit stress and decelerated expansion.
The imperative today is not about growth alone but the ability to deliver stable, sustainable performance every year. Belstar Microfinance is addressing this challenge by strengthening its digital abilities, governance, and operational resilience. Its Digital-first approach has streamlined processes, reduced reliance on cash-based transactions, and enhanced efficiency and customer experience across its branch network.
The company also leverages AI, business intelligence and advanced analytics to strengthen risk assessment and portfolio management. Technology is complemented by investments in people, ensuring employees are equipped to deliver robust customer relationships and continuous execution.
Besides, Belsar is enhancing customer convenience through its digital ecosystem, including the Belstar App and numerous digital repayment channels. Looking ahead, the company remains focused on responsible expansion while maintaining portfolio quality, operational discipline, and its commitment to financial inclusion. Guided by its purpose of Lending Hope. Building Futures, Belstar aims to build resilient, digitally empowered institutions that deliver sustainable value for underserved communities.
