After a month-long fight with the virus, Indian sprint great Milkha Singh, 91, died on 18th June Friday night of post-covid-19 complications.

On May 20, Milkha, the Flying Sikh, was diagnosed with the virus and admitted to a private hospital in Mohali on May 24. He was discharged on May 30 before being hospitalized on June 3 to the Covid ward at PGIMER’s Nehru Hospital Extension owing to low oxygen levels. On Thursday of this week, the former Indian athlete tested negative and was sent to the medical ICU.

After a battle with Covid-19, he suffered symptoms, including a fever and low oxygen saturation levels, which worsened his health on 18th June evening. Today we lost a magnificent champion who made our sports amazing, and it’s important to remember Milkha Singh’s success story.

  • Milkha chose to join the Indian Army after considerable pressure from his brother. When he began running, his life changed.
  • Singh has proven his worth, first in inter-services tournaments and then at the international level.
  • India’s Flying Sikh set several records and earned numerous medals. His Olympic qualifying and a magical run at the Asian Games cemented his place in history. For 38 years, he held the national record in the 400 meters.
  • On May 19, the 91-year-old tested positive for COVID-19, but he was placed in home isolation after claiming to be asymptomatic at his Chandigarh home. The famed athlete, however, was admitted to the Fortis hospital’s ICU in Mohali on May 24 with “COVID pneumonia.”
  • He died just five days after his wife Nirmal died of Covid-related complications.
  • After succumbing to COVID-19 problems, Milkha Singh, one of independent India’s most famous sportsmen, will be cremated on June 19th evening.

Without the 1960 Indo-Pak sports meet in Lahore, where he defeated Pakistan’s Abdul Khaliq, Milkha Singh’s biography would be incomplete. After winning the 100m gold in the 1958 Asian Games, Pakistan’s Khaliq was regarded as Asia’s quickest man. Milkha defeated Khaliq in the 200m final after winning gold in the 400m at the same Games. General Ayub Khan, the president of Pakistan, gave him the nickname “Flying Sikh” at that time.
