Hard work, dedication, and a strong vision are the three key factors for success in the business realm. Mr Sathya Shankar, the founder of Bindu, has mastered all three. He has successfully turned a regional idea into an 800-core beverage company that presently commands nationwide recognition.
Sathya Shankar: Early Life and Entrepreneurial Route
Born in the year 1964 in Bellare village in Karnataka, Sathya Shankar is from an agricultural family. Due to financial difficulties and family, he decided to quit his studies and dropped out after class 12 and applied for an autorickshaw licence. He took a bank loan to purchase his first auto.
While he was driving the auto, Sathya Shankar’s mind was seeking better opportunities. With his hard work and dedication, he paid off his auto loan, which shows his dedication to discipline that later shaped his business empire.
While Sathya Shankar was earning well, despite all his efforts, he was not satisfied with his work. Hence, in 1987, he switched his career and ventured into the automobile garage industry. Later, he also established a tyre dealership and an automobile finance company.
In 2000, the visionary leader entered the mineral water business. The major turning point came in his life when Sathya visited North India. During this journey, he got an idea to add the local flavour of cumin seed to the beverage. He found market potential and market demand for this beverage.
Finally, in 2002, he started Bindu Fixx Jeera Masala. Because of its refreshing and fresh flavour, the local beverage quickly gained attention, and its market demand rapidly increased.
The Challenges along the Way
Like every story, Sathya Shankar has its own set of challenges. In the initial days, the drink did not find many buyers; he used to send 200 cases for sale, but half of them came back unsold. Limited market awareness and huge competition for a global brand were some other challenges Sathya Shankar overcame. The story that started with Rs 35 lakhs in 2001 has today reached the turnover of over 800 crore. This is a significant milestone.
Worldwide Expansion
In 2015, the company entered the global market by exploring its products in the UAE, Malaysia and Singapore. The company presently holds a worldwide presence with a solid reach to around 15 nations. At present, the company has its manufacturing operations across Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad. Soon, the company is about to set up its third facility in Bengaluru.
Many giant companies, such as Reliance, offer to buy the brand, Bindu. However, Sathya Shankar is sure of his business and did not sell it. He presently has multiple endeavours in the pipeline for his country and its people.
Presently, the company has a team of over 10,000 people working in the SG Group. As Sathya Shankar believes, we should not be afraid of defeats, we should not look back, and hard work ensures success. He followed this and succeeded on his path.
Sathya Shankar is continuously moving to reach the revenue goal of ₹1,000 crore with pan-India penetration. He is continuously moving to make his ethnic-flavoured carbonated beverages and juices popular nationwide in the near future. His ultimate objective is to embrace his in-depth South India success and turn it into a nationwide success story. The company is actively shifting the consumer preference towards regional flavours and nostalgia-driven consumption.
