Investment of Rs. 1.27 trillion Approved: Semiconductor Industry

Including a semiconductor Fabrication unit of Rs. 91,000 by Tata Group and PSMC (Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corps) of Taiwan, Cabinet has approved three semiconductor manufacturing units of Rs. 1.37 Trillion in Gujarat on Thursday, February 29,2024.

The Fabrication Semiconductor unit by Tata is going to be India’s first unit setting up at Dholera Gujarat, it will have the capacity to produce 50,000 wafers/day. This will help strengthen India’s position in the semiconductor Industry, Cabinet IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned in his speech.

Other two projects include a chip assembly plant by Tata at Morigaon in Assam with an investment of Rs.27000 crore and CG Power plant that will produce around 15 million chips estimated at a total of Rs.7,600 crore. Which will be established in Sanand Gujarat. All three plants are set to get started in the next 3 months.

Apart from these, the government is almost going to seal the deal with Israel’s chipmaker Tower Semiconductors offering Rs.90,000 crore.

Pushing forward the vision of “Make in India”, Mystery of Information and Technology (Meity) has launched the PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme for the development of semiconductor and display manufacturing environments in 2021.

Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics, and Information Technology, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw said that this step is going to create around 26,000 direct jobs and more than 1,00,000 indirect jobs in the semiconductor industry.
