Cyclone Biparjoy Brings Rainfall to Mumbai, Air India Schedules Disrupted

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast light to moderate rainfall with gusty winds of 45-55 kmph at isolated locations in various parts of Maharashtra, including Thane, Raigad, Mumbai, and Palghar on Monday, June 12.
Today morning, Mumbai experienced high tide waves due to the intensification of cyclone Biparjoy into a severe cyclonic storm. Rains were observed in several areas of Mumbai and Maharashtra on Sunday night.
Consequently, Air India has announced flight delays and cancellations due to the prevailing weather conditions.
“Due to unfavorable weather conditions, along with the temporary closure of Runway 09/27 at Mumbai airport and other consequential factors beyond our control, some of our flights are delayed or cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience caused to our passengers and are making every effort to minimize disruptions,” the airline stated in a tweet.

Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall between the Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan on June 15. The IMD has issued an alert for Thane, Mumbai, and Palghar, and has advised fishermen in coastal areas to remain vigilant from June 11-14.
In addition to Mumbai, the weather office has predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated instances of heavy to very heavy falls in Northeast India over the next five days.
For Assam, IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has issued a ‘Special Weather Bulletin,’ indicating a ‘Yellow Alert’ for Sunday and Monday, followed by ‘Orange Alerts’ from Tuesday (June 13) to Thursday (June 15).
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is likely in isolated areas of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim over the next 48 hours, followed by heavy to very heavy rainfall in the subsequent three days. Isolated places in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are also expected to experience heavy rainfall for the next three days.
In Northwest India, the IMD has predicted light to moderate isolated to scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, except in Uttar Pradesh, over the next five days.
According to the IMD, hailstorms are likely in isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for the next three to four days. Severe thunderstorms with squalls are very likely to occur in isolated parts of Rajasthan on June 15.
Furthermore, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from June 11-15.
