News highlights

  • BCCI seeks new lead sponsor as BYJU’s ends $35M deal.
  • Interested parties can bid by purchasing ITT and meeting eligibility criteria.
  • Lead sponsor will gain high visibility on the Indian cricket team’s jersey during the upcoming ODI World Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued an invitation to interested businesses, inviting tenders for the lead sponsorship rights of the national cricket team. This move comes in response to ed-tech company BYJU’s decision to terminate their $35 million deal with the board. BYJU’s cited a reduction in branding expenditure as the reason for their withdrawal.

Previously, the Indian cricket team’s jerseys prominently featured BYJU’s as the lead sponsor across all three formats of the game. However, with BYJU’s stepping away, the BCCI has taken the initiative to seek a new lead sponsor. To facilitate this process, the board has released an Invitation to Tender (ITT), inviting interested parties to bid for this prestigious opportunity.

In a statement, the BCCI clarified that any party interested in submitting a bid must purchase the ITT. However, only those who meet the eligibility criteria outlined in the ITT, along with other specified terms and conditions, will be eligible to bid. It is important to note that the purchase of the ITT alone does not grant the right to submit a bid.

The bidding process for the sponsorship rights is expected to generate significant attention, particularly with the upcoming ODI World Cup scheduled to be held in India later this year. The name of the lead sponsor will be prominently displayed on the front of the Indian cricket team’s jersey, offering unparalleled visibility and exposure.

In a recent announcement, the BCCI disclosed its partnership with renowned sportswear giant Adidas, securing them as the official kit sponsor for the Indian cricket team. With the addition of the lead sponsor, both brand names will receive prominent placement on the team’s jerseys.

Certain categories of brands have been banned from bidding for sponsorship rights as they are deemed prohibited. These include manufacturers of athleisure and sportswear, alcohol products, betting companies, cryptocurrency entities, real money gaming platforms (excluding fantasy sports gaming), tobacco brands, and those associated with offensive content such as pornography or public moral offense.
