Samarpan Recovery Services: A Beacon of Hope in Addiction Recovery

10 Innovative Companies To Watchout in 2024

In today’s fast-paced world, addiction and mental health issues have become increasingly prevalent, affecting individuals and families across all walks of life. The stigma surrounding these conditions often prevents people from seeking the help they desperately need.

Samarpan Recovery Services, a pioneering organization in India, is dedicated to providing modern, evidence-based, and ethical behavioral health treatment. At the helm is Martin Peters, Chief Operating Officer, whose extensive background in mental health and addiction treatment has been instrumental in shaping the organization’s mission and approach.

A Mission Rooted in Compassion and Excellence

Samarpan Recovery Services was founded with a clear mission: to bring modern, evidence-based, and ethical behavioral health treatment to India, focusing on therapy-led rather than medical model interventions. Martin Peters, COO, emphasizes, “We are committed to offering services that match the quality available in places like Thailand, the US, UK, and Europe. Many people travel abroad for rehab, and we want to provide equivalent, if not better, services right here in India.”

The organization caters specifically to individuals with substance use disorders or process addictions, ensuring a focused and specialized approach. They do not mix clients with primary psychiatric disorders, nor do they accept involuntary admissions, maintaining a high standard of care and respect for each individual’s journey.

Comprehensive Recovery Services

Samarpan offers a range of services designed to support individuals and families through every stage of the recovery process. Their residential center in Pune provides primary care for those with substance use disorders or process addictions. This intensive program includes group therapy, individual therapy, complementary therapies, personal training, massage, yoga, meditation, and medical, nursing, and psychiatric support.

For those transitioning back to daily life, Samarpan’s outpatient center in Mumbai offers an array of continued care services. This includes family support groups, intensive outpatient programs for addiction, trauma, depression, and anxiety, psychiatric and psychological evaluations, drug testing, recovery coaching, and one-to-one counseling. “Our goal is to create a mental health hub in Mumbai, eventually offering services seven days a week with extended hours,” Peters explains.

A Holistic Approach to Treatment

Understanding that addiction is multifaceted, Samarpan employs a bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach to treatment. This comprehensive strategy addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of addiction. “Our programs are built on solid therapeutic structures, including thorough assessments, process groups, relapse prevention, CBT and DBT skills, mutual aid awareness, and effective treatment and discharge planning,” says Peters.

Group therapy, recognized as one of the most effective approaches in substance use disorder treatment, is a cornerstone of Samarpan’s methodology. Engaging families in the recovery process is also vital, providing sessions and support groups to help them navigate their loved ones’ journey to recovery.

Structured and Personalized Residential Program

The duration of Samarpan’s residential program is tailored to each individual’s clinical needs, with a minimum stay of four weeks. “Studies have shown that longer stays in treatment produce better outcomes. We currently offer stays of up to 13 weeks,” Peters notes. The program is intensive, running seven days a week, and includes a wide range of therapeutic activities and services designed to support holistic healing and recovery.

Robust Outpatient Services

Samarpan’s outpatient services play a crucial role in ensuring a seamless transition from residential treatment to daily life. These services are available to all clients and include group and individual support, integrated with their personalized recovery plans. This continuum of care is vital for sustaining long-term recovery and helping individuals achieve their life goals.

Support Groups: Building a Community of Recovery

Support groups are an integral part of Samarpan’s approach, available to clients both in residential and outpatient programs. They offer two peer-led support groups per week, along with facilitator-led groups and individual sessions. These groups provide a safe space for clients to share experiences, gain insights, and build a supportive community.

Continued Care: Beyond Aftercare

Martin Peters prefers the term “Continued Care” over the outdated concept of aftercare. “Residential rehab is not the end; it’s just part of the process,” he explains. All clients complete a recovery plan, incorporating a GORSKI Relapse Prevention plan. Samarpan is the only service in India with Advanced Certified Relapse Prevention Specialists and is an Accredited Centre of Excellence for GORSKI-CENAPS.

Celebrating Success Stories

Success at Samarpan is defined by each client’s personal journey and achievements. “Every client is a success in their own way. We are here to facilitate their journey, not to claim their success,” Peters says humbly. Over the past two years, Samarpan has seen many individuals flourish, building a vibrant recovery community and alumni network. They host events for past clients several times a year, fostering a sense of belonging and ongoing support.

Accreditation and Recognition

Samarpan Recovery Services is proud to be an Accredited Centre of Excellence for GORSKI-CENAPS Relapse Prevention, the only one in India. They are also on track to complete their CARF Behavioral Health Accreditation for Residential Services by early 2025. Additionally, they operate as a licensed facility under The SMHA, adhering to the highest standards of care and ethical practice.

A Leader with a Vision

Martin Peters brings a wealth of experience to his role as COO. With a career spanning over three decades, he has worked in various capacities within the mental health field. Peters is a registered nurse, certified substance abuse therapist, cognitive behavior therapist, specialist alcohol and addictions counselor, and advanced certified relapse specialist. He has played a pivotal role in developing destination rehab in Thailand and has contributed to several international standards committees and conferences.

Reflecting on his journey, Peters shares, “I’ve spent the last two and a half years in India, initially as the Director of Residential Services, and now as COO. Our residential center is now under the leadership of Obi Unaka, a highly accomplished addictions professional from the UK.”

Overcoming Challenges

Like any organization, Samarpan faces its share of challenges. The primary challenge is recruiting and training staff with the specialized skills required for addiction therapy. “There is minimal addiction-focused training in India, and working as an addiction therapist is vastly different from being a psychiatrist or psychologist,” Peters explains. To address this, Samarpan invests in training and supervision, building a core team of dedicated professionals.

Another significant challenge is overcoming the stigma and preconceived notions surrounding mental health and rehab services. “Breaking down these barriers and making services more accessible is an ongoing challenge, but we are making progress,” Peters asserts.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Samarpan Recovery Services aims to continue expanding its reach and impact, offering hope and healing to more individuals and families affected by addiction. “Our values are rooted in compassion, excellence, and a deep commitment to ethical practice. We strive to create a supportive and empowering environment for everyone who walks through our doors,” Peters concludes.

In a world where addiction and mental health challenges often seem overwhelming, Samarpan Recovery Services emerges as a pillar of hope, offering the essential tools, unwavering support, and a nurturing community to help individuals reclaim their lives and create brighter futures.
