Overloaded Bus Traveling from Amritsar to Katra Falls into Gorge, Leaving 10 Dead & 55 Injured

A tragic accident on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway near Jhajjar Kotli claimed the lives of ten individuals, while approximately 55 others sustained injuries. The incident occurred when a bus, carrying 75 passengers and en route from Amritsar to Katra, plunged into a gorge.

Jammu SSP Chandan Kohli revealed that the bus was overloaded, surpassing the prescribed passenger limit. The ten deceased individuals were identified as residents of Bihar, according to the police.

“Ten people lost their lives, and approximately 55 individuals were injured. All of them have been safely evacuated, and the rescue operation is nearing completion. An SDRF team is present at the scene. The bus was carrying more passengers than permitted, and this aspect will be investigated,” stated the SSP.

Authorities confirmed that the passengers aboard the ill-fated bus were originally from Bihar. They were accompanying a family who had organized a ‘mundan’ ceremony for their child and was en route to Katra to visit the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine after the ceremony.

The injured individuals were transported to a hospital in Jammu for medical treatment.

Expressing deep sorrow over the casualties in the accident, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha stated that he had instructed the district administration to extend all necessary aid to the injured.

“I am profoundly saddened by the loss of lives in the tragic bus accident in Jhajjar Kotli, Jammu. My heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, and I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. I have directed the district administration to provide all possible assistance and treatment to those affected,” read a tweet from the Office of the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor.

This incident occurred one day after another unfortunate accident in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district, where a tractor-trolley fell into a gorge on Monday. The mishap resulted in the death of eight individuals, including six women and two minors, while 26 others sustained injuries, according to a PTI report.

The accident took place in the evening as the victims were returning from a religious program held at the Mansa Mata temple, approximately one kilometer away from the site.

According to the police, it appeared that the driver lost control, leading to a collision with a pole and subsequently causing the vehicle to plunge into the gorge.

Officials conducted a search operation at the accident site in hopes of finding any survivors. State Minister Rajendra Singh Gudha promptly arrived at the CHC in Udaipurwati to gather information about the incident from officials and local residents.
