Canada Issues Advisory for Citizens in India Amidst Controversy Over Khalistani’s Killing

Written by Sanjay Kumar

Tensions between Canada and India have escalated following an advisory issued by the Canadian government to its citizens residing in India. The advisory comes amidst an ongoing dispute between the two nations over the alleged assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s assertion of “agents of the Indian government” being involved in the killing has strained diplomatic relations.

The advisory, prominently featured on the Government of Canada’s official website, urges Canadian nationals in India to exercise a “high degree of caution” due to the perceived threat of terrorist attacks across the country. It also emphasizes the fluidity of the situation and advises citizens to stay vigilant, monitor local media, and comply with local authorities’ instructions.

Furthermore, the advisory strongly suggests that Canadian citizens consider avoiding non-essential travel to India, citing concerns for their safety and security. It advises individuals to assess their need to visit India based on various factors, including family or business requirements, familiarity with the region, and other relevant considerations. For those already in India, the advisory encourages a reassessment of the necessity of their stay and suggests departure if it is deemed safe.

In a region-specific caution, the advisory advises against all travel to Jammu and Kashmir, citing an “unpredictable security situation” that includes threats of terrorism, militancy, civil unrest, and kidnapping. However, it clarifies that this warning excludes travel to or within the Union Territory of Ladakh.

India has categorically rejected Justin Trudeau’s assertion of a “potential link” between Indian government agents and Nijjar’s assassination, denouncing it as “baseless” and “motivated.” Indian authorities have expressed doubts about the factual basis of the claim and raised concerns about possible undisclosed motives or political considerations influencing such statements.

In response to the escalating diplomatic tensions, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly expelled a senior Indian diplomat, identified as Pavan Kumar Rai, who headed the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). In a reciprocal move, India expelled Canadian High Commissioner to India, Cameron MacKay. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that this action was taken to convey India’s growing concerns over “Canadian diplomats’ interference in our internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities.”

The situation continues to evolve, and both countries are closely monitoring developments as they navigate the diplomatic dispute surrounding the Khalistani’s killing.
