By Sanjay Maurya

A total of 2.45 million tickets have been sold so far for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the global football governing body FIFA said on Thursday (August 18). According to FIFA, the last sale period, which ran from July 5 to August 16, sold a total of 520,532 tickets on a first-come, first-served basis.

FIFA said the biggest number of allocated tickets were for group stage matches such as: –

  • Cameroon v Brazil
  • Brazil v Serbia
  • Portugal v Uruguay
  • Costa Rica v Germany
  • Australia v Denmark

“Fans in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, USA, Mexico, UAE, England, Argentina, Brazil, Wales, and Australia led the digital queues by securing the largest number of tickets,” FIFA said.

FIFA said the launch date for the next sales phase would be revealed at the end of September. Over-the-counter sales will also run in Doha after the launch of the last-minute sales phase. Notably, this is the first time the World Cup will be held in the Middle East.

The opening ceremony happens before the host nation’s match against Ecuador on November 20 to kick off the 64-game tournament a day sooner than originally planned. World Cup tickets can be purchased through the official FIFA website, where fans must register an account on FIFA’s ticket portal.
