India Achieves Record-Breaking Success at Asian Games 2023 with 71 Medals

Written by Sanjay Kumar

In a historic triumph, India has set a new Asian Games record by securing a remarkable tally of 71 medals, surpassing its previous best of 70 medals. This remarkable feat was achieved at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, as the Indian contingent displayed extraordinary skill and determination.

The crowning moment came when the archery pair of Ojas Pravin and Jyothi Surekha clinched the gold medal in the mixed team compound final, defeating a strong South Korean pair. This victory not only secured a gold medal but also propelled India past its 2018 record of 70 medals.

In the 2018 Asian Games, India had achieved a commendable haul of 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze medals. Fast forward to the 2023 edition, and India has showcased its sporting prowess by securing 16 gold, 26 silver, and 29 bronze medals so far. The nation’s athletes continue to excel in various events, with several more medals expected to be added to the tally.

Shooting and archery have emerged as India’s standout medal events in the Asian Games. In the field of shooting, India has won a remarkable total of 22 medals. Athletics has also contributed significantly to India’s success, bringing home 23 medals, with the promise of more to come.

Adding to India’s medal count, race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo secured a bronze medal in the 35km mixed race walk event early in the competition. This achievement helped India match its performance from the 2018 Jakarta Games.

The icing on the cake was provided by compound archers Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam, who clinched India’s 71st medal by winning the mixed team gold medal in archery.

India’s chef de mission, Bhupender Singh Bajwa, expressed his delight, saying, “It is with great pleasure that I would like to state that India has forged its impression with the best-ever medal haul in the Asian Games by crossing the 70 mark in the medals tally, and there are more to come.”

India had set ambitious goals for the Asian Games 2023, with the aim of crossing the 100-medal mark at this prestigious continental event. The catchphrase “Aab ki Baar, Sau Paar” (translating to “crossing 100 medals this time”) encapsulated India’s determination to achieve this milestone.

As of now, India boasts an impressive medal tally of 16 gold, 26 silver, and 29 bronze medals, with over four days of competition still remaining. The nation’s athletes continue to shine on the international stage, making their country proud and further establishing India’s presence in the world of sports.
