The Multi Billion Dollar Opportunity Hiding Inside India’s Wedding Season
India’s 2025 wedding season generated an estimated 6.5 lakh crore across 46 lakh weddings, as reported by the Confederation of All India Traders. That figure gets repeated every year around this time. What usually gets left out is how little institutional capital has gone into companies trying to organise that spending.
Two names come up repeatedly: The Wedding Company and Meragi. Their confirmed funding is small against the scale of the market they are trying to professionalise. That gap is more interesting for founders and investors than another round of size statistics.
A Market Too Fragmented for Easy Domination
The reason may lie in the fragmented spending. Jewellery takes 15% of wedding spend, catering 10%, apparel and sarees another 10%, with the rest spread thinly across photography, decor, music, lighting and travel. No single category comes close to being dominated by a national brand.
The government has promoted India as a wedding destination through the India says I Do campaign, but a March 2025 Lok Sabha answer said wedding tourism development is carried out primarily by individual state governments, with the central campaign playing a supporting, promotional role. The larger task of organising this economy comes from private businesses.
Two Companies, Two Different Bets
The Wedding Company, founded in 2023 by Pawan Gupta and Rahul Namdev, is making the clearest attempt at organising wedding services right now. The company raised 1 million dollars in pre-seed funding in July 2025, led by LVX and Tremis Capital, followed by a 2.75 million dollar seed round in June 2026, led by Wellingdon Advisors LLP. The company reports its service order value grew from 51 crore rupees to 115 crore rupees over the same period.
Meragi is taking a different route. It was founded in 2021 by Mukund Mohan Raj, Abhinav Chandran and Lakshminarayan B, and it raised a 9.1 million dollar Series A led by Accel in July 2024, with Peak XV Partners and Venture Highway also participating. That single round is larger than everything. The Wedding Company has raised across both rounds combined. Before its Series A, Meragi reported a gross merchandise value of 48 crore rupees and set a target of 100 crore rupees for the following year.
Both companies’ confirmed funding is against the size of the market they operate in, and this imbalance is the real story here.
The Transparency Problem Hiding Inside
Matrimony.com is a listed company with no real exposure. Its April 2025 investor presentation describes a forward integration into marriage services through its asset-light vendor platform covering venues, catering and decorations. It is the only business in this space with disclosed, audited financials. However, the numbers are not the same. Different financial data providers report Matrimony.com’s FY25 revenue as either 475 crore rupees or 528 crore rupees. One report states a year-on-year decline, and another cites growth for the same fiscal year.
Imagine if one public company does not get a clean number reported about it; how little independently verified data exists across the rest of the sector.
The Real Lesson for Anyone Building in the Industry
Seeing the recent reports and market, it is clear that the wedding economy is not a settled business category yet. It is an early, unproven professionalisation effort sitting inside a market whose size nobody can agree on, backed by a small number of funded companies.
For a founder, that is not a reason to stay away. But they should observe what the two most visible players are actually building, one betting on the underserved middle market, the other on full-stack execution at venture scale, before deciding where a narrower, more expanded business might fit.
